Remember back a year ago when everyone with access to a TV camera or word processor was telling us how US forces would get chewed up and spit out in Afghanistan, just like the Soviets did?
Why were they wrong? Because NCA put small teams of highly trained individuals on the ground with indigenous troops, just like SF is trained to do, and got the damned job done. You heard about a couple of friendly fire incidents, but they happen in every conflict. The huge numbers of successful fire missions and engagements didn't get reported on CNN, only the few that went wrong. With the phenomenal power of modern munitions, when things go wrong, they go spectacularly wrong.
As far as Somalia goes, Tuukka is absolutely right. With the ridiculous limitations under which they were operating (no armor, no fast movers, no Specres), the Rangers and SFOD-D troopers in Mogadishu performed well above and beyond the call. 18 US troops were killed in that mission, and conservative estimates of Somali dead vary between 1000 and 1500.
They call those guys "the silent professionals" for a reason.
