On February 12 at 10am, the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution will hold a hearing entitled “Proposals to Reduce Gun Violence: Protecting Our Communities While Respecting the Second Amendment.”

The subcommittee is chaired by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL).

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is the ranking Republican member.

Committee page.

There does not appear to be a witness list yet.

UPDATE:

Witness List (talk about stacked... looks like 4 witnesses for the gun grabbers, 2 for the Constitution):

Panel I

Timothy J. Heaphy
United States Attorney
Western District of Virginia
United States Department of Justice
Washington, DC

[He apparently goes way back with AG Holder; supervisor on FBI Safe Streets program; basically a white collar criminal defense lawyer]

Panel II

Laurence H. Tribe
Carl M. Loeb University Professor
Harvard Law School
Cambridge, MA

[well known, very liberal constitutional law professor; "the Constitution permits, and that sane public policy demands, vastly stricter firearms regulation than exists in the United States today."]

Dr. Daniel Webster
Director and Professor
Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research
Baltimore, MD

[apparently has a hard on for the NRA: linky.]

Sandra J. Wortham
Chicago, IL

[Chicago Democrat politician (I repeat myself); sister of Chicago LEO killed in the line of duty; Deputy Director of Chicago PD(?)]

Charles J. Cooper
Partner
Cooper & Kirk, PLLC
Washington, DC

[DC lawyer; former SCOTUS clerk; Assistant AG under Reagan; appears to have joined a pro-2A amicus brief in Heller]

Suzanna Hupp
Lampasas, TX

[also joined amicus brief in Heller; survivor of 1991 Luby's shooting (Texas); strong 2A advocate]

It also appears that C-SPAN TV will carry at least part of the hearing starting at 10am.

They cry "profiling" any time you arrest one of Obama's sons, but now we're supposed to believe they give a shit about crime in "Our Communities"?

Who exactly is "Our", anyway?

When the local thugs were doing violent home invasions in my town, I don't recall seeing Little Dick Durbin helping people install new deadbolts.

When people are getting shot and stabbed at my evening bus stop, I don't see any politicians getting out of their limos to help dress wounds.

All of the "FBHO" and "F this government" is quickly becoming "FUCK the majority of this country".

I own guns because I know I can't count of most of my alleged countrymen to do anything but sell me down the river.

The staffer who won the office "name the hearing" contest probably got an extra day off.

How is Cruz the "ranking" Republican if he's only got 30 days time as a Senator under his belt?

Don't get me wrong, he's great and he's mine, but I thought that kind of pecking order was based on seniority.

There has to be a "senior" Republican, and the others (in this case, Graham, Cornyn, and Hatch) either didn't want it or couldn't have it.  There are limits to the number of committees and subcommittees you can be chair or ranking member of.

Someone needs to go there & scream "why don't you just ban murder & leave the law abiding citizens alone?"

(Did anybody else chuckle a little bit when Code Pink heckled Swinestein so many times that she had to clear the entire chamber the other day?)

They can talk about this crap all they want. Who cares? It is just a horse and pony show of people who think they matter. Good grief, I think we should just ignore them.

These witnesses look cherry-picked, and the Susan is added to it so that they "appear to balance things out".

Here's a good stat for you to throw at the grabbers pushing for UBCs:

80,000 rejects in the NCIS system last year.  44 were actually prosecuted.  That's about one half of 1% of people prohibited from buying guns, prosecuted for attempting to do so.

And they think MORE background checks will be effective?

Are they stupid or something?

It's a little less than that

44/80000 = .00055 = half of a *tenth* of a percent.

Sometimes I wonder if the real reason for he low prosecution rate is that they know the false positive percentage is unable ceptably high and procecuting would expose the flaws in the system.
