I found a named and numbered purple heart at an antique shop for $30.  I would like to find out who the service member is and the story behind the medal if I am able.  The name is "John J. McMonagle" and the number is 23310.  I am not interested in selling it, I just believe something like this deserves to be investigated and cherished.  I was hoping someone on this board could give me an idea as to where to start to find out about Mr. McMonagle.  I have checked the National Archives but with only a name and a medal number I didn't get very far. I have also done searches of databases on the internet but have had no luck.
