I'm looking for a good .40 self defense round for CCW (when we get it)  Any good suggestions?

+1  180 grain is hard to beat.  Recoils about the same as my 147+p out of a G17

Gold Dot, HST, PDX1/Ranger T.. any of those would be good, I prefer the 180 gr. loads myself.

Winchester Ranger Bonded (also sold commercially as PDX1), Federal Tactical HST, and Speer Gold Dot...all in 180 grain. They're the top three performers. I've carried all three in various duty pistols, and I would feel perfectly fine carrying any of them.

You still have plenty of time to read the ammo FAQ.

My own preference is 180 grain HST; but read the FAQ.

I wanted some Speer or Ranger T. But all I could find around are some Golden Sabers. Are they any good?

140gr dpx is my choice. Great penetration and nasty wound channel.

Thanks, I just hope they don't make it too hard to get a permit (or whatever they end up with).

I have the luxury of having a good friend who is a forensic firearms analyst in a crime lab.  He says the 180 Gr Gold Dot is the best performer in its class.  Winchester Ranger SXT in 180 is a close second then Federal HST

I roll Gold Dot in ALL my SD handguns.

Kai, I certainly wouldn't feel uncomfortable carrying them.

I bought a ton from Guns & Ammo a couple years ago when they had a sale (about $.50/round in all major calibers). I carried 230 grain .45 GS in my duty gun for a long time until I found some PDX1.

For the money, get some of that cheap Winchester (3 letter Gov) 180 Gr Bonded, as recent as this week $20 for 50 rounds at SGammo.

Definitely the kind that is 40 caliber in diameter, but does not fit in a 40 short and weak handgun.
