I have never owned a BMW and am looking to get in to one.  I am looking at a 325i with Xdrive.  Can the Xdrive be shut off for RWD only operation?

Don't know about x-drive specifically but any AWD/4x4 robs of you wheel HP and gas mileage no matter if it's turned off or on.
You sure you really need the wheels under power up front?

IMO RWD is one of the selling points of a BMW.

All it takes is a failed sensor or two, and there you have it, front or rear wheel drive.

But I guess that the real answer you are looking for was...1st Post.  No.

From everyone I have ever talked to on the subject BMW has the worst AWD system.

Infiniti, Audi, Mercedes, Subaru are all much better.

I have a 530 xIT.  A 5 series Wagon.  And no you can't turn off the all wheel drive.
