Midland 75-822 [url]www.midlandradio.com/products.asp?pid=29[/url] It's a full-powered handheld that comes with a car kit that replaces the lower portion (the battery pack) and includes connections for power, antenna, and external speaker. The car adapter piece can be left in the car and easily hidden, and reinstalling the battery pack allows full handheld use (though, of course, with shorter range). This is a very high-quality unit. Look around; you should be able to find one of these for $90. Make sure you get the 822 model; the 820 does NOT include the car adapter kit. -Troy |

Whatever you get, immediately take it to the CB shop at any truckstop, and have it "peaked-out" (the transmission output increased to the legal max-12W, as opposed to 4W out of the box). If they charge more than $20 to peak it out, they're ripping you off.

Ham is nice if both/all of the people you plan to talk to also have them, but CB is superior as a general purpose and/or emergency device because many more exist and are used. -Troy |

but CB is superior as a general purpose and/or emergency device because many more exist and are used. In any significant emergency, the CB bands will be so crowded as to be completely useless. Visualize a large city with just 40 telephone lines (each of which will be virtually useless due to interference during an emergency ), and you start to get the picture. Furthermore, the average person with a CB will be no less clueless than the rest of the population — not that it will keep him/her from attempting to "help out". Five minutes of listening to a ham emergency net would be more informative than five days of attempting to get any useful info from a CB. |

Make sure you get a good antenna and have someone adjust the SWR, a non-resonant antenna can burn up the final output transistors on your new CB. this place has good prices on CB gear. If you are serious about emergency communications, amatuer radio is the only way to go.
Stepping up to Ham radio from CB and FRS is like going from a worn out .22 to a tricked out AR or M1A. The only thing CB has ever been good for in my experience is listing to truckers talk about how to bypass traffic jams. I have twice been stuck on the side of the road far from home, a quick look in the repeater guide found a 2 meter hamn repeater nearby, and one quick call for help got someone to reply. Both times I was asking them to call a tow truck, both times they asked what the problem was, then showed up with the parts I needed and helped me get going again. |

Cell phones are still probably the best thing for breakdowns, accidents and such. CB is good for directions, traffic reports and to find out what is going on ahead of you. For person to person radio contact I would recommend one of those FRS things from motorola or a similiar company. I would sincerly hope that nobody would be wanting to use a CB in the event that SHTF. |

There are emergencies, and there are SHTF emergencies. I grant you that a CB is lousy or worthless for the latter (but, actually, so are cell phones and FRS radios, and often even landline telco service). But if you need something for a PERSONAL emergency, and you're out somewhere that has no cell phone coverage, a CB can be very handy. For example, 4x4ing out in the boonies and getting stuck, or whatever.

Peaked out CB to 12W is also illegal as hell...Get a ham ticket or stick to the 4W CB junk. Just a Ham speaking point of view.

Hey, thanks for the advice! I'm [b]not[/b] looking at this for use in massive emergencies, riots, or whatever. This is something for getting the word on where the police are hiding, how to get around accidents and traffic jams, yaking, etc.
If I wanted something more serious, I'd be all over a ham radio. Thanks much! Mike |
