While the point stands, be careful taking totals from the FBI. The FBI doesn't have Florida or Alabama listed in 2011, and Illinois data is incomplete on table 20.
FDLE reports 2011 firearm murders are actually up 3.3% over 2010 when they had 380 handgun murders and 280 non handgun firearms murders, while hands/fists/feet dropped from 90 to 60.
In 2010, the FBI listed 12,996 murders, but once you add in FL, IL, and PR, it's up to 15,217, with at least 9,444 firearm murders and 6,398 handgun murders.
In 2011, the FBI reports 12,664 murders, but Alabama adds 301, FL adds 984, and IL only has 452 listed instead of 721.
A more accurate annual murder count is therefore 14,218, and this still ignores Puerto Rico, while DC and the USVI are counted.

PR saw a record number of murders, 1130 people were killed by December 30,2011, so that would bring the total to 15,348.
