I was reading the wiki on 5.56 and it said that ATK has supplied over 350 million rounds to the DoD.

Are these now in the field over the M855?

Anyone here use them (on deployment?) I think they look fascinating.

Standard issue for US Army. It was the round that was used for Phase 2 of the IC test as well which means standard issue for the foreseeable future. The Army really loves the round, and after firing 100s of thousands of rounds in testing I'm still not 100% convinced it's superior to M855. Curious to hear from some downrange guys to see how they like it.

Too big to fail

More cost...more wear...mediocre accuracy...and less terminal performance than the basic FBI duty load.

People probably got awards for this.

My understanding is yes, according to reports from some friends of mine in the Army.

There's even one of those really gay Army educational videos about it you can find on YouTube.

Haven't seen any in the private sector... Would like to get my hands on some for testing.

The lead-free primer thing concerns me a bit.

M855 is still standard issue.

ETA: My first deployment is coming up, but I have friends over there right now that are still using m855.

Bore erosion is crazy with the A1. However, the round still has good dispersion with up to 5 inches of bore erosion. Bolt life does suffer because of the increased pressure of the round.

I fired 1000's of 50's era .50 rounds in Iraq so the current standard issue isn't always current fielded.

I was deployed from March 2011 till March 2012 we had a mix of M855 and M855A1. Most just stuck to keeping the same type of rounds in a mag. So some people had a mixture of both some just 855 and some just 855A1

The volume of 855 in US inventory is staggering. It will be with us for decades. It is still produced...

A1 has real issues including cost. I wouldn't be shocked if it dies out...especially if the Marines continue to decline it.

I've seen millions of the steel penetrator tips.

I'm suprised it doesn't cost $2 per round.

That wasn't the final design if I recall... Think the Bismuth/Tin part was replaced with compressed powdered copper or some such. Projectile may be longer too.
