So the guys at work have brought up an argument as to who would win in an all out deathmatch between a Silverback gorilla and Bengal tiger. I say gorilla but everyone else says tiger. What's your opinion? I'd like some good points to throw at them when we come back from Christmas so I can win this argument.

the tiger would fuck the gorilla up but the gorilla could probably shatter the tigers spine and rip it apart before the tiger would mortally wound the gorilla

Historically, the big cats of the savanna have been the most feared predators of the monkey / ape / humanoid category of creatures. Sleek and powerful, quiet, sneaky, ruthless and lethal.

Tiger would shred the gorillas guts before he could grab his balls.  Tiger-1, gorilla-0.

I keep picturing a tiger trying to hit the gorilla with his paw, the gorilla grabbing the tiger by the leg and swinging the tiger into a giant tree trunk causing major internal damage

The tiger would win because I would shoot the gorilla with my Ruger.44 carbine.

I think it all really depends on whether the tiger gets the drop on the gorilla, tigers are masters of stealth attacks.  If the gorilla sees the tiger coming I think it may be another matter all together.

The top weight of a gorilla is 450 lbs.  the top weight if a Bengal tiger is about
500-550 lbs.  if they were both at top weight and males, barring a surprise attack,
both would die.  The tigers claws would rip the flesh of the gorilla, and the blows
of the gorilla would shatter the tigers bones.  Both have large canines, so both
bites would be about equal.  I give it to the tiger to win, but it would eventually
die a short time after the altercation.
Just a side note: leopards have been known to kill gorillas.

How about a male grizzly bear vs. male lion?

Pretty much what I was going to post. If the primate was able to get the upper hand ie sneak up on the tiger; then yes it would have a chance, otherwise I think the primate would be in deeeep trouble

Apex predator versus herbivorous forager?

Leopards kill Silverbacks.  Tiger > Leopard.

Now, if Ditka coached the silverback?  All bets are off.

As strong as a gorilla is, I think the cat would shred it.

How many times have you surrendered while playing with a kitten that has razor sharp claws?

Gorilla bite force is roughly 1300psi, Tigers are somewhere around 1000psi.  Either is plenty to snap any number of bones.  In a head on match both being completely aware, I'd still say the cat though.  They are amazingly fast.  Even compared to Gorilla's.

The tiger would win quickly. It is a killing machine. No fucking leaves, fruits or nuts for a tiger, just blood and guts.

Now a grizzly vs a gorilla, there you have some controversy.

The force of the bite is only part of the issue.  A mouth designed to rip meat from living animals is a far cry from one designed to eat foraged vegetables.

Then there's this difference:

Cage match?  Who knows. In nature the gorilla would never know what happened , the tiger would stalk him and pounce. The end.

No way, a grizzly would easily kill the gorilla, and probably the tiger too, they have claws that are worse than a cat.

This is true historically. The Romans would pit 4 lions against a bear as "part of the show" in the gladiator days and the bear always won.

A tiger would probably destroy a lion, though.  Lions are over-rated.

Bears are impressive killing machines either way.  My money would be on a grizzly against a tiger.

That gorilla looks like he smells like shit!  Bad breath and generally poor personal hygiene!  I'll bet his breath could knock a buzzard off a shit wagon.

The tiger attacks and kills all different sizes and shapes of animals throughout its adult life. Some of these animals are much larger than a gorilla. Adult gorillas occasionally fight other adult gorillas. They do not hone their skills of attack against other types of animals.

The tiger wins easily.

If the Bengal could work with a stick and move it could bleed out the gorilla, but if the gorilla gets hold of the Bengal he would shatter the cat to pieces.
