In the lead up to OIF I was working with a couple of Brit officers and one day at lunch the topic of officers disgracing themselves came up. I asked them what they do when a flag officer disgraces themselves. They said they put them in a room with a gun with a single bullet loaded in it, until they do the right thing. The General deserves all the punishment if the allegations are true, regardless of the women's motivations for bringing the charges. If nothing else, to discourage other senior officers from exercising such pathetically poor judgement.
As far as the women themselves, there were 3 of them...at least. Over a period of several years it appeats. At least the one quoted only came forward when she saw she was being supplanted. And frankly, while it is likely that the General used his rank and power to coerce them, it appears that one or more of them only complained after things didn't turn out the way they wanted. So...UCMJ all around. But I guarantee that more people knew about this than the General and his harem. His aides (unless it was these three women), his CSM, his PSD...a General is not anywhere close to anonymous in a combat zone. His staff covered for him, and they need to be punished too. Loyalty to your command is one thing, covering up felonious behavior is a completely different beast. |
