When you watch the news, it's easy to get the impression that Islam and the West are at war. They show videos of riots by American embassies and you get the impression that all Muslims protest the USA and hate the USA. When in reality, 95% of the rest of that country, the people are going about their daily lives. You think the million mom march means all American women hate guns and want them banned? |

The first thing Americans need to do is face reality, and embrace the fact that a free society isn't "safe", freedom isn't "safe". You can't build up enough "homeland security", hire enough LEO's, or write enough laws to make it safe. If you try all you will succeed at doing is sacrificing your liberty for the illusion of safety. Crawling into a statist cage isn't the answer.
There are things we can do. The United States can become energy independent in 10-15 years, if we can get .gov out of the way. That's a huge step towards making the middle east less relevant. We can start by ending our progressive involvement in their countries. Even when our intention is to help them, it just ends badly for us. Nation-building does not work. They're going to need to figure out their own problems. If we weren't a focal point for their anger over the mess they live in maybe they'd "grow up" as a culture over time. I don't know, and I don't care. I just want to quit spending "future" tax dollars over there. Instead of spending our defense budget on the Middle East how about stepping up our R&D on weapons systems, like missile defense, early warning systems, modernizing our nuclear deterrent? How about only using our military for war, instead of global police and nation-builders? How about shrinking our government, and reducing our bureaucracy so we can unleash the power of freedom in the economy, and maintain our economic power? How about getting back our American "traditional values" of individual liberty? There's lots of things we can do, the problem is we won't learn from history, we keep on repeating mistakes. |
