You just never know when temptation will walk in the door. I was minding my own business, and BAM, there was temptation staring me in the face.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center 627 eight shot .38 Super (yes .38 Super). I admit a .38 Super revolver isn't exactly practical, but I have a soft spot for the old .38. The first new handgun I ever purchased was a Colt 1911A1 in .38 Super.  I always thought the .38 Super doesn't get the respect it deserves, not to long after it hit the market the .357 magnum came along and the poor old .38 was all but forgotten. If it wasn't for the Mexican gun laws, the .38 would have completely disappeared into history.

I will give you 50 bucks for it, to rid you of the heavy burden of yielding to temptation that you are now carrying.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 38 special /357 mag bore is slightly larger than 9mm.  You can shot 9mm in those revolvers set up for moon clips but accuracy will suffer a little.

38 super and 9mm are the same bore and there shouldn't be any loss of accuracy.

So would a 9mm chamber and fire in a 38super auto???

What is the difference a few thousandths make? If the bullets firmly in the rifling but not filling the groove between the lands it seems you would just lose a little velocity, not accuracy.

No.  The .38 Super is too long.

Now believe it or not, .38 Super ammo can usually be safely chambered and fired in a .357 Magnum.

The .38 Super has a semi rimmed case and it will usually headspace in a .357 chamber.   The .38 Super is a high intensity round, but so is the magnum.

So it is perfectly safe if only a little unorthodox

Congrats OP! I was lucky enough to own one myself (S&W M627-4) just like it a few years ago, one of the first runs they did. I used it primarily for ICORE and occasionally Limited 10 (minor) in USPSA. They are sweet shooters and it was nice to have the capability to shoot both .38super and 9mm. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for S&W factory only moonclips. Also, if you're going to shoot both 9mm and .38super through it, be sure not to let the carbon build up too long in the cylinder before cleaning it, it builds up quickly. Enjoy your new wheelgun!

The grips are going to be replaced, they feel like you are gripping a 1"x4" board. Very uncomfortable to hold and I am more of an "old school" type. I am going to order these grips from Gun Grip Supply, I like the traditional S&W style grip and the grey will look good with the stainless.

You can run 9mm through a 38 super but it will have extraction issues because of the difference in rim size. The cartridge will be held against the breach face by the rim on the extractor. If you have an extractor tuned to 38 super comp it will usually run fine. At least it does on my EAA Witness stock.

The 38 super and 38 super comp survive in the US because for a couple of decades it was the only 9mm allowed to make major power in the open division of USPSA.
