A recent thread about someone getting some (silver) peace dollars in change at the bank, AND the thread about your favorite Western movie, made me wonder about this.
At the time it was issued, it was obviously legal tender in Virginia, and the rest of the Confederacy. Is there a specific statute in U.S. law that says Confederate money is no longer any good? Or is it automatically not any good, since it's essentially a "foreign" currency once the Confederacy was defeated? Although you never know in VA. After all, Lee-Jackson day is still a state holiday here.
I know it's an irrelevant question from a practical viewpoint, because this $10 bill is obviously worth a lot more than $10 today, so trying to use it would be as stupid as trying to pay for gum with a 1876 Morgan silver dollar. I'm just curious about it.
