Don't have a deer rifle yet, what can you tell me about it? Pics encouraged
I have one in .270
The 700 is a popular gun and IIRC you can get parts to fit it with a magazine. I love mine |
1700 posts and you can't search? Not only here, or precision rifles, or any other gun forum... like anything anyone states here is going to be any different or so differential than what a search would show up?

I have shot close to 600 rounds in 3 years through it. I had the stock bedded and a trigger job to bring it down to 3.5 pounds, and that's it. Shoots better than I do, for sure. |

I've had a 700 my entire adult life. As far as value, I would argue that there is not a better bolt-action rifle.

Every American should own one.
Good guns, not much more to say there. |

lol r700 threads in gd are as about as worse as they can be presented as a noob

No pics, but mine is a 700 BDL.
Some folks replace the extractor with a Sako extractor. They feel that the Remington extractor is too flimsy and isn't strong enough. Well, the gun design is 50 years old and they've yet to change it. Why change what works? Remington heard the concerns and conducted a test. They machined a dummy cartridge to accept a Mauser 98 extractor on one end and a Rem 700 extractor on the other. They then pulled against the two to see which would break. The Mauser extractor broke first. Jack O'Connor wrote of this in Jack O'Connor's Book of the Rifle. If you check out Stuart Otteson's Book, The Bolt Action Rifle, Vol. 1, you will find that Otteson rates the Remington as one of the best bolt action rifles every built. It has the fastest lock time of any commercially produced guns. Another advantage is that there is an entire cottage industry supporting the Rem 700 action. Bolt handles, stocks, recoil lugs, barrels, box magazines, etc. |

Okay, so besides the fact that I need one, would you guys suggest wood or synthetic for the stock? Always liked the 700P but the wood stocked one on the cover of this month's American Rifleman caught my eye as well. Leaning toward synthetic because I think I'd like to put some paint on it.

Quoted: There are better guns. Remington has really shitty QC. The dozen or so I have purchased have been fine, except for a slug barrel that has a shitty bluing job edit have not bought any recently though

Loved my 700 but recently sold it and went with this... http://www.lovuzdar.sk/userfiles/foto/793/1507/lovuzdar-1507.jpg I love the "old world" look and chambering in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. Mine has a lower scope mount height and a Leupold 2-7x compact. What is that piece of art? |

Well, it's not a Mauser action, and is therefore epic fail in comparison to everything that IS a Mauser action...
But I'm probably biased because I think the peak of Bolt-Action rifle design was in the form of the Kar98K, M1903A1/A3, M1917, and Enfield. But, if they ever bring back their 798 series (Essentially new made M-48s from Zastava in a fancy stock) I'll probably buy one in .308. |
My low-end 700ADL in .308 shoots cloverleafs with 180gr bullets. What else do you care about?
I apologize for contributing nothing to this thread. I just bought my first Remington 700 (XCR TLR) and I love it.

The knuckleheads on a local forum say the Model 700 has an unsafe trigger. They quote some "documentary" about the rifle being unsafe. The rifle supposedly fires when the safety is disengaged.
What is the GD response to these claims? |

Had some bambi tacos this evening harvested with a stainless 700 in 308. I also harvest bambi with a 700 in 243, 270, and 30.06. I shoot paper with heavy barrel 700s in 223 and 308. They work.

What is the GD response to these claims? It's the safety their thinking about. There's a (B.S.) video of the gun going off when the safety is disengaged. That same gun was examined by the factory which couldn't duplicate it. The circumstances under which the gun discharged is vague and not shown in the video. So, when kept clean and free of lacquer buildup (no WD-40), it is safe and reliable. |

There are better guns. Remington has really shitty QC. Agreed, I bought a NIB 700 CDL SS with fluted barrel in 257 Roberts it would not even chamber a round the chamber was short. The recoil pad did not fit the stock correctly and the over all build quality was poor. After I got it back from warranty repair it shot 2 MOA at best I sold it then |
Came in here to read what the trolls were going to say about the 700.
Leaving drooling over the idea of that CZ 550 with the Mannlicher stock in .308.
Can I just say Max, you have the best sigline on this site. |
I have owned two Model 700 one was a BDL in 270 and the one I have now is an SPS-AAC both were good rifles. Are there better options out there sure but the Model 700 does the job just fine
