"I'm
trying to get over my shock that a case of this magnitude is ready to
go six months after it's charged," Mohave Superior Court Judge Steven
Conn told lawyers on both sides at a hearing last week.

Venola,
53, is charged with second-degree murder after authorities said he shot
and killed his friend, James Patrick O'Neill, 39, after O'Neill visited
Venola's home in the 4800 block of Mayan Drive in Golden Valley.

O'Neill
was shot once in his chest by a large caliber rifle. His body was found
outside the home. The shooting was called into authorities by a
neighbor.

Venola, who is a former field editor for "Guns & Ammo" magazine, says he acted in self-defense.
