Can anybody tell me anything about this pistol. Especially what it may be worth. A friend of my brother's is hard up for cash and wanting to sell it ASAP. He said that he has till tomorrow to make an offer, or it goes to the pawn shop. The problem is , my brother knows exactly jack shit about guns and I know exactly jack shit about old revolvers. All I know is what's in the picture. Smith & Wesson Airweight.

Any help would be appreciated?

The serial number would give an approximate date of manufacture.

Otherwise, .38 Special S&W Airweight.

A model 37 round butt. Looks used hard. Carried hard anyway. Pin and recessed is always a consideration, but the over all condition negates most of the pre 81 desirability. $250.00 tops. That's is if the timing, lockup, forcing cone are in solid condition.

It's a S&W 38 special probably a model 36, does it have a flat latch or standard. Pinned barrel recessed chamber I'll bet as well.

Airweight, eh? Well, if the grips are original, it looks to be a pre-1968 Model 37.
Looks like it has some rust/pitting.
Make sure the frame isn't cracked on the underside flat where the barrel enters the (aluminum) receiver. While not at all common, that's a not-unknown issue that renders the gun unsafe and therefore worthless.

Assuming no crack and everything works OK, I'd say about $250'ish (the pitting puts a hit on the value).

Nice little carry gun, but nothing special.

In that condition I'd say about $285.00 - $325.00 as it is a older pinned version.

Chief's Special, airweight. The timing on the cylinder can go out easily but can be corrected by a competent gunsmith. In excellent condition they can get around $500. The one pictured is worth around $400. They make for an excellent CCW piece, but are a PITA to shoot.

I'd offer 200 bucks. That's more than he's going to get
from a pawn shop.

I read this and was thinking "Now, how the hell is an aluminum revolver going to get rust pitting?' But then I remembered those cheap basards at S&W didn't make the whole thing out of aluminum.

No, the "Airweight" designates it as having an aluminum frame. It's a 37.

Determines the type of model (pinned ad recessed, etc.). Condition determines price within subtype ("like new in box" down to "poor"). These are pretty common (lots were made, even if they are all sitting in safes and out of circulation) and would have to be a very rare variation to overcome the general condition - for example, a pre-1954 alloy cylinder (which should not be fired).

That was made before 1993 (S&W deleted "Airweight" on the barrel in 1993). It has a pinned and recessed barrel which dates it to before 1982. The screw pattern (what I can see) makes it post-1961.

New in box (which it ain't) might get you as much as $400. As it is (without physical inspection), $200 is probably a bit high.

Your brother's friend probably thinks it's some rare unobtanium shit that is worth gazillons. It isn't. S&W made thousands and that one's been used.

What they said. Very poor condition. The pawnshop btw is going to offer him about $60. Price accordingly.
