Obama has not given the US Military a 4 day weekend since he has been in office.
In my experience most Navy commands will not give out a 96 hour "Special Liberty" pass. One stands duty at some point in time during the long weekend, one works a day or one takes a day of leave. |

The military doesn't stop working on holidays while deployed. Plenty of day to day garrison and training events happen around holidays even in the states. Whenever possible in garrison, and whenever other duties don't interfere, Thanksgiving is a 4 day. |

I can distinctly remember having thanksgiving of and then coming in to work on Friday. Needs of the Navy dictate, and 72 hours is all a lot of commands will give you without burning a day of leave. |

Christmas thru New Year's is about the same, boxes of candy bars, lots of drinking, playing video games in sweats. Good thing I am going to be home in US for all of it. |

First of all I said NOT counting deployments, add another 4 at least to that. So 8 out of 22 ~30% or so. Second, read the entire series of posts, I was responding to the original "Thanksgiving is ALWAYS a 4 day". Which it clearly is not. The special lberty policy is generally held at the command level. Operational and training requirements impinge on that. Sometimes Friday is just another work day. In my experience, about 1/3 of the time. My point: "Whenever possible" is not "Always". Always means it can be counted on. Reference wingnutx post above. Now I did observe PACAF routinely giving the entire Pacific Air Force units special liberty "Family Days" in conjunction with every federal holiday... |

I was under the impression that it was up to the CO's discretion as to how much time off was allowed for a unit. They definitely can't go past 96 hours though.
I've had a few skippers who got around that and gave us a 5-day pass provided we face mustered on Saturday for all of 3 minutes. |

If you are going out of the designated local area, which differs from MAJCOM to MAJCOM, you will have to use your leave days. In my 10 years with the USAF, we've gotten the four-day weekends mostly for the bigger federal holidays. Also, the family days are pre-identifed early on and sent out via a memorandum from the 4-star. |
