I studied the options hard and ended up buying the mini ipad. Apple just makes great products but we also already have a tone invested in iTunes stuff from iPods and iPhones. Going ipad we already have content and aps, switching would have been work plus more money.

What kind of phone does he have?
If he currently uses an iphone, he should get the ipad (the apps transfer to the ipad for free, no need to buy apps again)
If he currently uses an Android based phone, a good quality android tablet (Samsung, etc) would be better for the same reason.

If he doesn't have either, I'd get the iPad. It just works. I have both and use the iPad a ton more.
I have two iPads and an HP TouchPad with WebOS and Android ICS on it. The Touchpad is not used nearly as much as the iPads are.

I like Android, but I think the iOS devices are easier to use, especially for novice computer users.

Im a MS guy myself, but I love my Ipad. I let my mom use it, saves me a headache since she cant figure out Desktop or Laptop MS computer(she is 70 and not a computer person). Apple products are stupid easy for most people to figure out. That said, I love the Samsung tablets.

My dad owns an ipad and likes it very much, he uses it all around the farm to take and send pictures, respond to e-mail, and whetever. All from the seat of a tractor, never had a problem with it. My uncle, who is also a farmer, owns one and uses it constantly as well with no problems. So unless you have first hand negative experience with ipads, let your friend get what he wants.
