ONE evening in September 2011, Ali Rahimi, a 27-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, was hanging around with friends outside his building in central Athens when more than a dozen Greeks approached. Several men set upon Mr. Rahimi, one with a knife. Panicked, he fled into his apartment and fought back, managing to push the men out the door. He found blood gushing from just above his heart, one of five stab wounds in his back and chest. Mr. Rahimi survived and is staying put for now. But his friend, Reza Mohammed, who was also injured in the attack, is considering what was once unthinkable: moving back to Afghanistan, which he feels would be safer than Greece http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/18/opinion/sunday/europes-new-fascists.html?pagewanted=all |

I wouldn't do it and don't condone it, but I understand where the impulse comes from.

One can draw parallels with Greece's far right Golden Dawn party, which is enjoying more and more support, to the rise of the Nazi party during the post WWI Weimar Republic. Whereas the Nazis blamed their problems on Jews, the Golden Dawn party is blaming immigrants. The only difference is Greece's problems are self made. It will get far uglier before it gets better...

Heck, I've been saying that Nationalism is going to make a big comeback in Europe. Those folks have been fighting and killing one another as long as there has been recorded history, and probably before that too.

Are the GD guys calling for socialism like the Nazis did? Not from what I can see. They seem to be mostly fixated on nationalism. GD doesn't seem to blaming their problems on immigrants, but note that their presence and consumption of resources doesn't help Greek natives at all during a profound crisis (that they are essentially to blame for). And their extreme violence seems to be getting the immigrants to leave. |

Much of Europe is teetering on the brink of similar social issues.
Immigration is not necessarily a bad thing if it is done as a gradual process and the incomers bring with them a valued skill or wealth that will see them living independent of the welfare system and contributing to the quality of life in their new country in a positive manner. Immigration in this manner is of huge benefit and can see a good rate of integration. Unfortunately, many parts of Europe have seen an almost uncontrolled influx of people seeking asylum and a better life, only to find themselves on welfare, being supported by the indigenous population. There is a conflagration of two key aspects that will see the rise of nationalism and violence against immigrant populations: 1) A rapid rate of social change and an increase in immigrant groups will naturally cause a social tension to build as the indigenous population begin to feel a strain on resources, and the see the formation of migrant communities in Ghettos on their doorstep (Migrant communities naturally group with those with whom they share a common language or religion, or nationality) 2) Economic hardship brought on by the policies of those who allow uncontrolled immigration and an influx of cheap labour in a tough economic climate. These are the two critical fuels that only need a source of ignition to start a significant and very destructive process that could spread to more moderate members of the population and lead to a rise in violent nationalism. |

This is human nature as evidenced by human history.
The only thing that keeps people from banding together along, cultural, racial, ethnic lines and killing each other is the thin veil of an abundant society. As soon as things get tight, there is a percentage of people that will band together, blame another group and be violent. If things get bad here where the FSA diesn't get what they think they are entitled too, it will hapen here too. |

Several years ago, we had some Greeks as customers at the shop I was working at. They elected to stay here, while we spent a few weeks replacing engines, doing some airframe upgrades, and upgrading the radios on the plane they had just bought. It was kinda entertaining to have them around the shop, and quite a few cultural discussions popped up (ask a Greek how to properly write and pronounce Molon Lave, and they are more than happy to do that and tell you the story in detail).
Two things I learned: 1. Greeks hate Turks. 2. Greeks complain about their immigrant problem, at least as much as some people in the US complain about Mexicans coming across the border illegally. |

The rise of the Far Right is going to be a necessary countermeasure to the Left in Greece.
They won't ever get a majority, but a swing Right is needed. Sorry about the whole violence part of it, but... life is hard. |

I'm not picking sides but have seen enough biased reporting from the NYT that I wonder if something beyond hatred of brown people set off the greek mob. |

I'm not shocked or surprised.
I am interested in what this will translate into politically, esp. for secessionist movements within Europe. |

I agree with the quote below, also I must stand up for the Afghan. For an individual Afghan to get out of Afghanistan takes a lot of work. One immigrant vs. 4... immigrant "wins".
