On my last APFT before my back surgery I did 105 in the 2 min time limit. And I am talking full military pushups all the way up and down none of the sissy crap they call pushups now days where you go down half way and then back up all the while having your butt up in the air camel style. My sone entered a chin up contest on saturday at the sweet corn festival in Adel, IA and he did 10 full chins from dead hang to clearing the bar with his chin each time. The only other person to try and do real chins did 3 and the rest of the kids did only 1/2 way down chins at best and the idiot judging the contest allowed it and it really pissed me off. Oh well.

Keyword, man style.  Inclined.

100 is impressive, but you lightweight guys have less mass to move in the first place.  [;)]

I'm 46 years old.  5 years ago 100 pushups a day was a piece-of-cake...
But 5 years ago I had a major work-involved relocation, ie. I quit working out.
Today I have to work hard to get 50 pushups, but, I have re-instituted my workout regime (weights & cardio), I hope to be back in top form in less than a year...

45 consecutive full motion push-ups (butt NOT in the air).

QUESTION FOR ALL THE 100+ GUYS:

Is there a "best" way to train to get to the 100+ push-ups?  Some people say do a lot of bench press and never do any push-ups.  Others say do push-ups until burn-out each set.  Yet others say just work on doing multiple sets and gradually increase.

Surely there is a "best" way...anyone have an opinion (Not trying to hijack the thread, want addition information from the respondents).

After eating and drinking like a pig for three years I started working out again in June.  I'm up to 100 inclined push ups every other day.  I do 4 sets of 25 with good form and slow, steady motion.  I just tried to see how many I can do consecutively.  I got up to 56 before my arms gave out.

Far too few.  used to be able to do 60 or so in a coupla minutes.  Of course, I'm on the chunky side.

Once I start working out regularly again next week, I'll improve a bit.

Do them in sets.  Five sets to a workout.

To start you do as many as you can in each set to develop a baseline of what you can manage to do five sets of. Your goal is to be REALLY struggling to complete set number 5.

Now make it tricky.  Do two or three 5 set exercises.  standard shoulder width push-ups, wide arm push ups, and what we used to call "diamonds" where your hands are close together and your thumbs and forefingers meet to form a diamond under your chest. This three exercise system will build all the muscles associated with the push up and improve your scores.  Inclined workouts (with your feet on a chair or some other 18 inch high object) will really concentrate your weight over your arms.

To ensure better form in push ups, do lots of crunches and sit-ups to strengthen abdominals and lower back muscles. The same 5 set program holds.
