Dune blew my mind when I saw it in the theater as a teen.
I tried to watch it a few months ago and became convinced that my parents must have been putting drugs in my food back then. 20 minutes in, I just had to turn it off. |

Dune, like the first animated Lord of the Rings is an attempt to explain too grand of a story in 2-3 hours without the budget or patience to do a large series.
Dune should have been done in 2-3 parts followed by all the original books also done in parts. The story is too big, and deals with concepts to complex to cram into a 3 hour movie, that ends up sucking because you only have 1983 filming techniques. |

I really enjoyed the book series a lot, but Frank Herbert didn't make it easy to like. You had to really think your way through those books. No glossary at the end to explain terms. No narrative to fill plot points. You might read something on page 250 and realize it explained something he mentioned on page 50. Not a casual read. A dense and fascinating story. He's the Dostoyevsky of sci-fi.
That said, any move adaptation would be extremely reductive of the book. A shadow. Flimsy. Unless you spent 20 hours on it. Apparently there was a lot of footage that had to be cut. Could have been used to make 2-3 films. I've heard rumors for years about how they're going to re-edit it as a series of films, with all the excised footage put back in. That sounds fantastic to me as the production values were slick. As it turned out, they'd spend a million dollars on the Emperors throne room set and only have it in the film for 30 seconds. Stupid. The studio should have handled it differently. They pissed away their chance at greatness. Also, I think Sting would have been a better Paul Atreides than what's his face. His intensity on screen was great, and what's his face that played Paul, seemed dull and lifeless. At the sci-fi cons at the time the rumor was that Sting was offered the Paul part but he wanted to play a villain and chew scenery, instead. Still a good movie, I think, it's just that it could have been a transformative movie, like a sci-fi "Ten Commandments". |

I'd already read the book several times when the movie came out. My step-mother gave it to me, was her favorite book in high school (she's only 10 years older than me....go Dad!). I thought the movie sucked.
There's too much background info they couldn't explain in the movie. As a big fan of the book....the movie had me asking "WTF?" Sting? Really? And that guy with a shelf for a chin? I also had a hard time seeing Lady Jessica with clothes on. In the book for some reason, in my mind, I always pictured her naked. Go figure

For the more mundane there are movies like Skyfall where terrible actors (2 exceptions and neither play the good or bad guy) try to out "dry wit" their deliveries the entire movie. Mix that with a terrible script and a generic action movie with very little action and you get a blockbuster for the type who hated Dune. To each their own. Some folks don't like Firefly either. That's why God makes finger-paint and adult diapers. |

It took a few pages to figure out what they were talking about or doing exactly sometimes but that is fine. It keeps my mind involved with what I'm reading. I honestly didn't know there was a glossary at the end until I was 3/4 through the first book, and I deduced what the terms were pretty much 95% of the time without it, although it was neat to read some of the terms in the back for a little stronger explanation. I haven't seen the movies and I'm a bit worried I'll be sorely disappointed if I do, so I think I'll just stick with the books. |
