Pretty damn cool.
ETA: the photo themselves, not all the carnage. |
|
wait a minute, you mean barrier islands were supposed to be barriers, not places to build homes?
what the fuck, who woulda thunk it? and of course us taxpayers get to pay to rebuild all that misguided shit. they play, we pay... moral hazard, anyone? |

The way that is set up is much more dramatic than just static before / after pics.
I've never seen that done before. You can go back and forth to get a better understanding. I had no idea it was that bad. |
|
I'm sure it's bad, but from an areal view it doesn't look like much got pushed around other than sand.
Maybe I was expecting something like the Japan before/after pics |

You see, there's a frustrating fact about shorelines and barrier islands...
|

Yeah... that didn't come off correctly.
Figured that might be what you meant. It is a cool use of technology. Strange that we have to go to an Australian website to see this. |

Maybe I'm just use to seeing gulf states after tornados/hurricanes. |

I have decided that living next to the ocean is not worth it. It's to scary.

Queens still fucked up beyond recognition? ((Meanwhile the red cross and the administration mention how great thier response was))

That’s somehow supposed to be shocking?
Don’t build on a sand spit 6 inches above sea level. Here in Oregon there are certainly houses, businesses and infrastructure at risk of storms. But very few people role the dice like they do back East. We get 100-150 MPH wind storms on the Oregon coast EVERY YEAR and don’t wash away. After seeing the japan tsunami damage this really is nothing in comparison. Not that people didn't and aren't suffering in NY/NJ. |

I still cease to understand human interest with living right on the coast line. Sure its cool to have a beach as your backyard, but nine times out of ten it will eventually become your front yard and that is an inevitability.

lots of buildings built too close to the ocean...
A lot of places on the coasts of FL have a rather large set back... Look at the third picture. Houses still in one piece... Road... What should be undeveloped land but instead has houses that were destroyed by the storm surge... Expected storm surge distances in most of the pictures. Flooded low lying areas that are mostly roads and parking lots... which if they are designed right are actually supposed to be lower than the buildings around so the water goes there instead of in the buildings... About the only WOW pic in there is the barrier island that was cut in two. ... That's what happens... barrier islands change shape... disappear... and so on... that's why they need to be evacuated during storms and insurance there is so high... Oh and the title of that should be "Weak Cat 1 storm Sandy has predictable storm surge: before and after" Learn from places that get these storms frequently... Also support the victims. |

Quoted: yeah....hiroshima, now that was bad I'm taking this as sarcasm... and an indication that you misinterpreted my post. You seem to think I'm dismissing the damages as "not that bad" Which is not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that the damages are as expected/unsurprising. The damages aren't uncommon and building codes in those areas need to change to reflect that fact. The fact that buildings were allowed to be built in those locations at all or weren't built to withstand this amount of storm surge is what outrages me and should outrage everyone else. |

If they had surrendered their money and freedom to Algore, none of that would have happened.

My family has had a beach house in Bay Head, New Jersey for nearly 60 years. Thankfully it survived, but looking at the pictures of Mantoloking and the areas around the house, I cant believe how lucky we got.

Where is Kanye West when you need him. BHO doesn't care about NY and NJ.

Matthew 7:24-27 where the Bible says:
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. Stupid people build their houses on the sand. Even a 2000+ year old book knows this. RR |

I grew up in Hawaii where tsunami are always a possibility. I will not ever live on the coast again.
Visit? Sure but not a primary residence. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I'm amazed at all the people with expensive boats that did not take them out of the water. Like what did they think was gonna happen?

Beach front property gets destroyed from hurricanes.
Nothing new. I don't understand the shock. |

Note to self - if stuck in a hurricaine, hide in waterslide.

And it will still look like that 6 months from now, just like Haiti.

I hope utility companies across the nation take note of all of this bullshit and refuse send anyone when the ice storms take out the gird. Of course that's not something they have to worry about this winter as the grid won't be rebuilt until next spring. |
