About 15 years ago I worked with a real POS who did two enlistments in (I believe) 11B.
When asked about his service he once said he was a Vietnam vet. I called BS to him on this because his enlistment years started in 1976 (or maybe 1975 I can't remember but the math didn't add up). His reply was that he was with one of the certain groups that didn't stop at the declared ending.He also spouted off shit like "I was Green Berets...bla bla bla".
Did I mention that I really didn't like this guy?
Well, I closely know some guys who were SF and this guy wasn't one of them, so I took what he told me for what I thought it was worth.

Here is where it kinda gets interesting.

Last week I was at my wifes office party and was having a gun talk with one of her co-workers husband. I've met this guy several times and have always thought that he was a stand up guy.
He mentioned that he somewhat recently sold a rifle that belonged to Carlos Hathcock.
I asked him if it had some history behind it and he told me that the Gunny had it from 1975 thru 1982 (I believe) and that he won 4 service rifle competitions with it and had 4 confirms with it.
When I asked him about the confirms he told me that the Vietnam war actually kept on going for some groups reguardless of what we have been told.
This guy who told me this was a Marine Recon sniper from DS with 3 confirms. He showed me his ink and I have no reason to doubt him.

I think it actually went from (in my opinion) from 1966 to about 1974/75.

I remember (in 74/75) digging BDUs, jackets, machetes, ammo belts, helmets and LOTs of other vietnam-era mil issue out of a trash room on many various occasions in the apartment complex that we lived in.

Mom always told me to throw them away because the people who threw them away "didnt want to be reminded of the war"...or some such.

Actual, official, combat-specific deployed forced first hit in 1960, and the last man was out in 1975.

UDT Advisers were in place (IIRC) as early as 1955 or 1956.

From the sound of it, the date you are more interested in is in 1975, the Fall of Saigon (30APR1975.)

My history book says that President Truman began supporting the French openely in 1950 with  weapons and money.

Not long enough, I just missed it....

We sent in advisers for the South's government at the time when the French started pulling out in 1956-58. We had air support units in place as early as 1960, my Dad was with the 114th Avn BDE, "Delta Airlines", from 1961-63. We first sent US ground troops in 1965 because Marvin couldn't or wouldn't support the corrupt puppet regime in the Saigon. We pulled out starting in 1971 and all of our ground troops were supposed to be out by 1973. Saigon fell 3 years later in 1976. Supposedly we were still arming insurgents against the North through 1980, and we had naval aviators flying CAS for them through 1980 according to a friend of mine who was Navy before he went Army. Whether or not that is true I can't say, but it certainly seems to be within the realm of possibility.

PS. If you took every guy who claimed to be SF or a combat vet and put them together it would dwarf the actual number of those who were. I am never hesitant to whip out my DD214. I am what I am and I was what I was.  Don't believe a damn thing until you see it in writing.
