Major utility companies in New Jersey said that they are welcoming any and all out-of-state crews helping to restore power, and have not refused any non-union contractors.
At least one media report out of Alabama claims that personnel from that state were turned away in Seaside Heights because they were not affiliated with a union. “We take crews as they become available,” said Ron Morano, a spokesman for Jersey Central Power & Light. “Everyone understands this is an all-hands-on-deck event.” One of those, Trinity, Ala.-based Joe Wheeler, was never in New Jersey and is unionized, its CEO, George Kitchens, said this morning. Eight Wheeler workers were instead dispatched to Maryland before the storm hit, a company spokeswoman, Mandi Phillips, said. “We are headed back home,” she said. “We were never turned away.” http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/11/non-union_utility_crews_welcom.html#incart_m-rpt-2 Some of you on here will eat up any bullshit that has an anti-union edge. |

Agreed. As I recall, most of the inter-company assistance agreements don't specify Union or non-union - just "qualified", just like mutual aid agreements in the FD and PD business. We had non-union guys from all over the place last year when we had hundred of miles of lines down, and all were welcome, despite ComEd being IBEW, and ComEd has sent line and trouble men around the country when they have needed it. |

I don't pass on the chance to dump on my political enemies. The actual truth is somewhat irrelevant, the optics and how far you can push the meme is relevant. Rules for Radicals, and all that. |

More than likely some low level dipshits turned the AL crews around. Now they have egg on their faces and are in CYA mode.

Decatur Utilities manager verifies claims workers were asked to affiliate with union before aiding storm victims
DECATUR, Alabama - Ray Hardin, general manager of Decatur Utilities, verified claims in an interview with FOX Business this morning that his crews were turned away from Hurricane Sandy recovery because they are not union-affiliated The report by Matt Egan on foxbusiness.com states that six Decatur Utilities workers were not in New Jersey but were stopped in Virginia and asked to sign papers for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers before they could assist in storm recovery. http://blog.al.com/breaking/2012/11/decatur_utilities_manager_veri_1.html#incart_river_default |

The company only cares about getting the power back on so they can start making money again. That's it.
Union goons pull this every single time the power goes out and as soon as the company or local politicians find out they scream at them, and the union files a grievenace despite the fact that the contract says it is OK to bring any qualified workers in an emergency. It amazes me how many people seem to be paying attention to the news for the first time ever because of this storm, damn near every big huge story that is being reported happens every damn storm. |

Jersey Power and Light doesn't serve Seaside Heights, so they have zero say over the place where that event took place. Some of you will defend the unions with BS that doesn't apply at any time, even when it is pro-union bullshit- like saying JP&L affects the decision in Seaside Heights is. Perhaps you should have looked for the facts before this post.... Seaside Heights runs their own electric utility. |

I was just getting ready to ask about that. I saw that happen in Memphis when a tornado blew away about half the power there. Line crews who showed up to help were turned away by public workers unions with 1000s of people still without power. It was pretty disgusting but that is what you can expect in big cities with big powerful unions. I expect this will also rear its ugly head with trans, food vendors, trucking, etc. in and around NYC.

They maintain, however, that agreeing to IBEW union affiliation would have been a requirement before they could have worked at Seaside Heights.
Well loookie there. |

Here's the Decatur press release.
Now, after reading it... would you say that unions and their idiotic ways are helping or hindering getting people help? http://ftpcontent.worldnow.com/wsfa/linkedwebdocs/Press%20Release%20Hurricane%20Sandy.pdf |
|
After reading all of the news stories about this I'm more than willing to bet that some IBEW exec took it upon himself to hit the marshalling area for these crews in a dunbass attemopt to sneak unions into some of these non-union power cooperatives. Probably thought that the desire to be helpful would get these guys to agree to "afiliate" with the IBEW and he could tell all his butt buddies that he done good..
When they said "no" and went home the IBEW jackass might have rethought the whole thing. |
