Agreed. As I recall, most of the inter-company assistance agreements don't specify Union or non-union - just "qualified", just like mutual aid agreements in the FD and PD business. We had non-union guys from all over the place last year when we had hundred of miles of lines down, and all were welcome, despite ComEd being IBEW, and ComEd has sent line and trouble men around the country when they have needed it. |

Decatur Utilities manager verifies claims workers were asked to affiliate with union before aiding storm victims

The company only cares about getting the power back on so they can start making money again. That's it.
Union goons pull this every single time the power goes out and as soon as the company or local politicians find out they scream at them, and the union files a grievenace despite the fact that the contract says it is OK to bring any qualified workers in an emergency. It amazes me how many people seem to be paying attention to the news for the first time ever because of this storm, damn near every big huge story that is being reported happens every damn storm. |

I was just getting ready to ask about that. I saw that happen in Memphis when a tornado blew away about half the power there. Line crews who showed up to help were turned away by public workers unions with 1000s of people still without power. It was pretty disgusting but that is what you can expect in big cities with big powerful unions. I expect this will also rear its ugly head with trans, food vendors, trucking, etc. in and around NYC.

After reading all of the news stories about this I'm more than willing to bet that some IBEW exec took it upon himself to hit the marshalling area for these crews in a dunbass attemopt to sneak unions into some of these non-union power cooperatives. Probably thought that the desire to be helpful would get these guys to agree to "afiliate" with the IBEW and he could tell all his butt buddies that he done good..
When they said "no" and went home the IBEW jackass might have rethought the whole thing. |
