The first casualty amongst people I know just hit. The guy worked as a part time ENT at an audiology/ENT office. He was hired on part time with the promise of full time work once business picked up.

Let him go yesterday.

Do you guys know anyone personally, not just numbers and statistics printed online?

No.  So far, everyone I know has avoided layoffs within the last couple years.

Only some former coworkers. They're thinning the herd, here.

My company laid off a software developer who just wasn't getting things finished.

She landed another job that afternoon.

A couple years ago, right before his wedding, my buddy called me and said "Dude, I just lost my job!".  He went in to work that day (non-union electrician) and was told that they didn't need him any more.  Sucked big time.

Not recently, that I can think of.  More than a few I know got hit a couple of years ago.

I do. My buddy, recently married, recently bought an nice house with some land, was laid off by the Ft. Benning Land Conservation and Management department. Really not sure what he is going to do to make ends meet. His job was very specific and not something he will likely find in the same field without relocating.

Know a few friends that we re laid off/let go but soon found work afterwards (with in a month or two), location where I work just hired over 40 people and will be hiring another 100+ more by January due to an expansion.

My wife since March 2011. Worked a few months as a contractor/temp....but no full time offers.

Know several over the last few years.  Most have found something but usually just temp/contract work.

since he's a doctor, can't be that hard to find another ENT position - they're in demand. least here in my sales territory.

In the process of changing companies due to contract change.

My office admin girl's salary came from the 4 of us on the contract where we work. She no longer has a job

Yes. My employer had to cut 33 positions this year due to economic reasons. (About 13 % of the work force) They used creative means to reach the count. Retirees and projected retires before years end. People who quit already this year. etc.
In the end, 14 folks got the boot in August. I knew several of them.

We had to lay off some of our full-time contractors. I had to do two of them myself, one was a single mother. :(

Had 2 different friends get laid off last week. One was let go that day, the other has 2 months!

[#19]
Yeah.

Alpha closed both of their mines down in the Thunder Basin, and all of their Eastern US mines due to the EPA waging war on coal fired plants.

They relied on short term contracts, unlike other mines, and it bit them hard.

If he wins again, I along with a metric shit ton of others, will be out of work.

I know one of the Dell guys who got laid off. He took the package and RAN.

My job went from running 40% ovettime and trying to kill us all with hours worked, to finally hiring a few and getting them half way trained after 9 months. We are now shutting down a bunch of stuff and looking at laying them off just when they finally can half way do their job.

I don't know anyone laid off but where I work two people quit who weren't replaced. So in effect that's a net loss of two jobs.

Not currently laid off but it is slow as hell right now.

We have contracts that are signed but it seems like a lot of folks have pulled back on spending money until after the election.

Hope I can survive until then.

1 friend who moved from NC to WA, had the job for 4 months and then laid off.

No layoffs around here for awhile.

The only people that I know that have been laid off recently are the guys who do paving/excavating/landscaping, but that happens every year.

I know some other people that have been fired, but that's not the same thing.

I know of some local companies that went tits-up but I don't know anyone that worked there.

When Obama took office my Wife had ~180 employees, she is down to ~120. Some were fired for cause ('cause they voted for Obama ) and some retired and she did not backfill the position, but yes, she has had to let some good people go simply because she did not have enough work to keep them employed. Also, she can no longer offer health insurance because nobody will write a policy that she or her employees can afford so ~80 full-time employees who had health coverage in 2008 are now on their own as well

My aunts company is laying off people in droves while moving jobs to India.  They are sending people home to work from there first and then laying them off a couple weeks later probably to avoid drama.

Wife has an impending layoff.  They lost a contract renewal, so once the current one's up...it's the door.   She's been with them for ten years and promised a nice severance if she sticks around till lights out.  People are bailing like rats on a sinking ship so she's been putting in extra hours to cover the slack.  She might as well stick it out.  We are fortunate to where we don't 'need' her job, I cover all the bills with mine.  She might as well take the severence cash, unemployment checks and enjoy her vacation.
