ass.  Well, you non california types since my ass as been thoroughly chewed already.

Think that they will pass legislation mimicing the california law?  They don't have to just renew what is there, they could make it worse.  We think that having a republican house will save us (well you, as I am already lost), but public opinion is way against us.  Hell, they could call it the anti-terrorist small arms acquisition act and have the media feed it to the public and few candidates would have the guts to vote against it.

Should you in the free world feel so complacent about the sunset?

here is my take on the 2004 sunset:

If another mass shooting with a so-called AW happens between now and then were screwed.

The antis want post-ban match targets, ect on the list.

I think the only thing we can hope for is work on the magazine ban. Maybe get pistol mags exempted? Oh wait! DiFi carried a 5 round .38!

Anyway we are screwed. Buy a post ban now or else you ain't gonna get one. Bush loves the AW Ban. [:(]

As much as I want it to go away, and I will do whatever I can to make it go away, I really think it will be renewed before it sunsets and they will try to make it worse.  It will be election time, jonny McStain along with the dems will use this issue against GWB and he will cave like his daddy did and make it permenant and maybe worse. His views on it have been made known and if he can use it to gain the milktoast moderates and soccer moms to sway his way, it's over.  If it did'nt sunset in a presidential election year I would say we would have a good chance of it going away and if we lose the house or not regain the senate......toast.[:|]

Yeah, I think it is going to bite us in the ass too.  The current law has the sheep thinking AWs are already banned, while we all know the ban did jackshit except eliminate the ever important bayonet lug and flashhider.

I'm thinking when the current law sunsets (maybe a pre-emptive extension with no wording changes would be best???)  there will be a call to pass another AWB.  And the antis are aware of the current loopholes, so they'll likely get it right next time...

We have one more election till then. We have a Republican in the White house now, So that means Democrats will gain seats in the House of Reps and the Senate. I would bet the farm that the law will be renewed and probaly be made tougher.

Had a donation request from the RNC today. Explained that no additional funds would be forthcoming until AW ban is gone and efforts are made to roll back other 2nd Amendment infringements.

Edit: typo

The ban will NOT go away.  I'd be willing to bet a year of my meager salary on that.  I would even go as far as to say it will be replaced by something even more restrictive.

Two factors will influence this:

1)  The term "assault weapon" will slowly be replaced in the general lexicon with the term "terrorist weapon".  The socialists and satists will probably start this transition next year.  Of course, the major media will fall all over themselves to perpetuate this.  So by 2004 you will have pompous a$$ commentators and politicians asking, "Why would anyone want to own a terrorist weapon?"  And since they will control the LANGUAGE of the debate, they will win.

2)  Timing.  The ban is set to end around Sept 11 of 2004 (I believe I'm right on this).  Emotion will dictate a groundswell of support for renewing the ban in the interest of protecting the homeland.  Since it is so close to the election, Dubya will be doing whatever it takes to get votes.

He counts on the fact that gun owners will believe they have nowhere else to go, and will vote for him regardless of what he does.  And for the most part, he'll be right.

Bottom line:
Buy guns
Buy ammo
GET TRAINING
GET PHYSICALLY FIT
RESIST!

For the 57th time.

The law will sunset

Nothing will be passed in its place

Does NOT matter how many shooting happen between now and then.

In fact every shooting proves that gun control doesnt work.

The Democrats themselves do not want to deal with gun control. It is popular in the coastal cities only, and then with only a certain class of wealthy, but not numerous, person.

It has cost the Democrats the last 3 elections, they have said openly that they don't want to deal with it.

Ouside of the costal cities the majority of the PUBLIC are fed up with it and its failure to deliver.

I'm a college student without much cash.  In fact I don't even have an AR yet since you have to be 21 here (about 4 months left).  Anyway, I've been trying to plan when I should buy one.

Congress moves slow enough where we should have some warning (time enough to buy) in the event that new legislation is introduced, correct?  I wasn't sure if I would have the patience to hold off until the current ban sunsets and then get a fully loaded AR, assuming there might be a gap between this legislation's sunset and the next legislation's beginning.  Suggestions?  Maybe I should just start a thread about AR buying strategies for those of us on a limited budget.

Since when has the public had any sway with how elected officials vote?

I think we'll know for sure after this November.

Why?

First, of the few 'competitive' house/senate races out there are some where one or both candidates are making guns an issue (pro or con). For example in MI, iirc, redistricting has one anti-gunner making a big issue of 'gun saftey' (as the current push is called), and 'loopholes'.

If we see the good guys win these kinds of races, then that should be a sign that the AWB may die (even temporarily). If not, I'll lean toward the 'we're screwed' mentality.

Second, GWB will not spend political capital on this issue. He won't try to force a new AWB, but he won't veto/not sign one either. So the power to let it lapse lies in one or both houses of congress. Hence, November.

Oh, and it will take some incredible feats of constitution bending for the FEDERAL government to actually ban CONTINUED POSESSION of any now-legal gun. But they could destroy the market for 'AW' type guns (by a total transfer ban with no grandfather clause), so only 'stock up' if you really need a 'full-featured' gun, not as an investment.

If the national AW ban sunsets could that help us poor Californians repeal our anti laws?

[green]I'll say it again... and I know not many of you approve of my decision:
If the AWB is renewed Im going to have what ever config I want to have my evil black rifles. When Im on my private land, I say the hell with them! Now if I go to a public range,I'll take one of my PC correct AR's and play Mr. Nice Citizen of the Future PRA.
How's that sound?[/green]
