I just saw a report on my local FoxLA news that giant Humboldt squids are washing up all over local So Cal beaches. La Jolla to be exact. Fisherman are catching them up to 8 miles off shore. If you are into Calamari steaks, these are the good kind. Up to 1" thick mantles. And they fight really hard!

I would advise against swimming out there right now, Humboldt squid can be dangerous. I've personally caught specimens in excess of 6 feet in Baja Mexico. And watch the tenticles too,  their suckers have a set of teeth in them. They are definately worth catching if you've never seen one up close.

No, they are part of the giant squid family. On the smaller end. But there have been some caught that were about 700lbs. The biggest ones we caught in the Sea of Cortez were probably only 40-50 lbs.

There are squid in the deep waters with eyes like 10" in diameter. And tentacles longer than a frigate.....
