...that no one else is allowed to make pistols chambered for 5.7x28?

There are a number of AR uppers in 5.7 that use the PS90 mags and MPA makes a MAC clone in 5.7 that uses five seven mags. So I would say no.

I don't really like the caliber, but other companies make 5.7 guns.

Sounds right, but is there really no mfg interest in making 5.7 pistols?

I thought that was the biggest draw of the cartridge, that you could get a very fast but controllable bullet capable of defeating soft armor worn by BGs out of a pistol...

I wish other manufacturers would pick it up.

But pistols?

I'm not aware of any handguns.

You're right about the purpose of the round's purpose though.

I just don't understand the point of civilians using it, considering AP ammo is not available.

Excel arms makes some 5.7 pistols too.

And masterpeice arms as mentioned earlier.

Why?

.22 magnum - 30 grains, 2200 FPS, 437 joules
5.7 - 28 grains, 2300 FPS, 460 joules

You can't get the good ammo it was designed for.  Why bother?

Isn't that velocity for 22 magnum out of a rifle?

Hk has the 4.6 as a competing round.

Seems like a Niche market.....and that Niche is not what gun companies want to cater to.

Except that you can't buy the ammo that does that, because "armor piercing handgun ammunition" is prohibited from sale in the US.

Otherwise the terminal ballistics are not impressive, and the huge muzzle blast and flash are serious downsides.

As an alternative you could get a 22TCM widebody 1911 style from Rock Island.

It's called the KelTec PMR-30.

30 rounds of .22 Mag...everything the FN will do, at a fraction of the cost, using non-proprietary, widely available ammo.

Dammit. I forgot I wanted that gun. Thanks for reminding me to spend money.

I think that after a catridge gets SAAMI certed,  anybody can chamber it and use the name.
I don't think the FN cartridge is anything special.

5.7 was designed to be AP ammo fired from a bullet hose P-90.

Unless you're in a stack of trained guys with likewise bullet hoses, the round is pointless.

QFT.

Don't forget bullets that are 50/$30, minimum.

That's $1.6666666666 per round

umm.... $30 divided by 50 is .6, so $0.60 per round.

Yep. Compared to sales of other pistols in common calibers, the Fie Seven is a fairly slow mover. IMO much of the market for it has already been tapped by FN.

LMAO. that's 0300 math for you.. whoops!

I did that calculation backwards. $50/30 instead of $30/50

Still, there are better rounds available.

The ratio works either way...you just got the units wrong.

You are still wrong on the price.  It's running about $22-$23 a box for SS197 right now if you can find it.  Used to be about $20 a box.

American Eagle was $20 box last week,$2 cheaper than the FN branded stuff. It's expensive compared to 9mm but not vs .40 or .45 these days.

LOL yea 5.7 costs around the sane as .45 ACP.

Just looked up these uppers, they look pretty interesting. Probably not worth the money, but a cool idea anyways with the ps90 mags going on top and the brass ejecting through the existing mag well.
