I may be moving to Austin in the next few weeks and would like some good ol AR15.COM input. Good / Bad areas to live. What are the shooting ranges like?  The wife seems to want to live in Round Rock. I see a big lake on the map to the west. Looks like a good place to be when SHTF unless SHTF involves flooding!

I live in Round Rock, so I can say you might like it here.  The lake is Lake Travis, which is where most of the rich areas are.

You will love everything about the Austin area but the people.

They are whinney-assed liberals a-holes! [:D]

But don't let that stop you from moving there, it is beautiful.

That lake is Lake Travis and its formed by the Colorado River, as is Town Lake within the City of Austin.

Someone else will have to tell you where to live, 'cause I'm not that familiar with the areas you want to avoid.

My steddaughter lives in Leander, and loves it.

Round Rock is nice, but so is Georgetown or Leander.

Austin is like our own private chunk of Kalifornia. A beautiful environment full of liberals, socialist and grunge rockers. [:D]

Ha!  When I lived in Texas, I dated a gal from Austin.  I also lived in Austin for a while there.  I agree--too many yuppies and liberal sissies.  She has lived in Austin for several years, and she too blamed it on the Kalifornians.

The shitty pary is that those Kalifornia assholes elect all these socialists to their state government.  Now, they're paying the price with huge taxes, a $30 BILLION deficit (that's for one year!) and all kinds of crazy laws.  Naturally, this drives those people OUT of California to neighbooring states like Nevada where people there have traditionally been anti-government, and the displaced Kalifornians pollute the voting populations there, thus bringing the scourge of liberalism to states that used to be a safe haven from that bullshit.

For just one example, in the past few years, in Austin, the transplanted liberals in Austin got the city council to pass a law that bans smoking in all restaurants prior to 3:00PM (or maybe it's noon; I forget).  Whether smoking bothers you or not, you gotta hang your head and cry when you see people voting away others' private property rights like that.

One funny thing is that there's this crazy transvestite bum (yes, bum as in beggar) who's off his rocker.  Everyone knows him (I think his name's Leslie) because he panhandles on 6th street, which is the big weekend party district in Austin.  He also has a huge contraption on wheels that he rolls around and hangs anti-police signs on the contraption saying the cops are hassling him.  Anyways, "Leslie" ran for mayor a few years back and got somewhere around 10-20% of the vote.  I think that's great.  Shows those politicians just how much respect they really have from their subjects.

I hear there is a small junior college for the "challenged" think the name is t.u.

Restaurants are considered public places, AFAIK.  I would prefer that people NOT be allowed to poison me while I'm in a public place.  Want to do it to yourself, that's fine, but when I'm in a public place, someone else smoking violates my rights.

But you're right about the Kalifornian liberal transplants... they pollute our voting base, and get stupid shit passed.  I wish there were a 'liberal' season... No bag limit!  No tagging required!!  :)

Calm down God Bless Texas it was all in fun.  I have many good friends who went there, it was just to liberal of a town/school for me.  Plus my granddad, father, and now my little brother all went there.  The only day it matters will be on Nov. 29.  That day is a little different.  Cadets won't change.

My father-in-law is an Aggie, and a good friend of mine just graduated from there and is now planning on attending law school.  I honestly have no problem with A&M myself and think the petty rivalry is kind of silly.  Besides, we have our hands full with hating OU.  [;D]

Round Rock is a nice place but if you head west on 620 out towords the lake, its mostly all new construction. Roads, schools, stores, houses and just about every thing else. The closer you get to the lake, the more it cost. No matter where you go, traffic is a bitch. Worse than Dallas imo.
You can still get land at decent price if you go out southwest of Austin, like out 290 towards Dripping Springs.

Now you good folks north of Austin beware this weekend...

Is traffic really all that bad? Can't be L.A. or Seattle. I think you guys are used to your quiet country roads. Thats what I want. A quiet 100 acres or so to hide out on.

Atleast the traffic there does keep moving (most of the time) unlike Dallas where it's stop ago at any given time.
Austin is growing so fast that everything is under construction.
Never been to LA or Seattle.
Hell, I don't even live in Austin, just spent a lot of time there in the last 4 years.
I do have a standing job offer in Austin and if my deal here in Dalls doesn't work out, I would move down there in a heart beat! [^]

I think you would want to decide whether to live
North or South when it comes to Austin.  There
are nice area in both directions.  If it is work
that is bringing you here then you could take
into account whether work is N or S, and look
for a place there.
100 acres to hide out in in Round Rock would be
out of the question, unless your last name is
Dell.
RR, Leander, 620, Cedar Park, and even some far
north parts of Austin are in Williamson County.
Most of Austin City is in Travis County.  There
is a BIG difference between the two. You'd have
a big and time consuming search on your hands to
find a majority liberal community, or mindset,
in Williamson, if it could even be found at all.
