Please say a prayer for the rescue of 9 miner in a PA mine. A broken bit has halted the rescue effort temporarily, water continues to rise in the mine...ECS

7/26/2002 11:30AM - Workers at the site of the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County have begun drilling a second 30-inch shaft, in an attempt to reach the nine miners trapped approximately 240 below the surface. Efforts continue to remove the piece of the original drill bit which broke about 105 feet below the surface early this morning. If that bit can be removed, drilling can resume in the original rescue shaft.

7/26/2002 3:15PM - Water is being pumped out of the mine shaft where the nine miners are trapped. The water level has been dropped by approximately 17 feet, and it needs to drop another 16 to 17 feet to significantly relieve the water pressure surrounding the air pocket being provided for the miners. Water is being pumped out of the mine shaft at a rate of approximately 20,000 gallons per minute.

7/26/2002 3:45PM - Contrary to earlier reports, workers still don’t have the broken drill bit out of the first rescue shaft. A different piece of equipment arrived in the last hour and will be used to try to get the broken bit out. In the meantime, drilling continues on a second rescue shaft. Workers have reached a depth of about 30 feet.

I'm not so sure, it has been estimated that there is 60 million gallons of water.

7/26/2002 5:00PM - All pieces of the broken drill bit have been removed from Rescue Shaft 1. Drilling will resume in the 100-foot hole. Drilling also will continue in Rescue Shaft 2. Shaft 2 is currently 40 feet deep.
