15% - 20% depending on service. I've been known to tip NOTHING if the service is lousy. There're so many "actresses" or "actors" around here that they feel like you're jumping on them for asking for a glass of water.

When in an establishment I rarely go to, around 20-25%.
In a place in which I'm friends with the staff ,anywhere from 90-100%. Since one of my jobs involves working in a bar I depend heavily on tips so when I go somewhere I'm usually a generous tipper unless the service bites ass. Alex |

I don't believe its an obligation,specially if its lousey,or I can't get any attention even if i take my pants off.If its decent I give the 15%
If its real good and natural I'll be real generous,mostly cause I see my self in their position working hard to get the tips.If they've added to the enjoyment of a meal out I'm more than happy to give them a tip that'll make em smile. |

I will tip anywhere up to 30%, usually depending on the service.
However, if the service is especially gruesome, I will tip ONE nickel and not talk to the waitress at all. These instances, thank God, are very rare. |

I think I've only stiffed a waiter once, but he was NUTZ. Got the order wrong and then yelled at me when I pointed out that I had not ordered shrimp whatchamacallit (if I did order it it was the first time in 37 years). Remember service people get paid very low wages because it's expected that you'll tip, unfortunately it has become a necessity even if the service is just adequate. |

I start at 15%, and move up or down on the scale based on service. Average service will get whatever the closest whole dollar amount to 15% is.

I have this arguement all the time.
a Tip is a gratuity, for going above and beyond just being an order taker and server. That said, I never tip less than $5.00, as I have 2 little girls that do leave a small mess, and when it is just me and my wife we tend to spend in the area of about $40.00 If the service is really good I will tip in excess of 20% But if service sucks, I leave no tip and I inform the manager that they have lost my business. |

Seems to me that if you leave no tip, the waiter or waitress just thinks you were a bastard. Leave 10%, and they'll just think you were cheap. Leave them next to nothing, and maybe they'll be so pissed that they'll snap out of it and treat their customers with the respect they deserve. I once gave a waitress my $.02 - literally! Service was atrocious, food was just plain bad, took 45 minutes just to get a drink, then another 30 for a refill after the glass was empty. Place wasn't busy at all. So I took two pennies out of my pocket and set them on top of the bill and left. the_reject |

I've probbaly spent way more time and money at restaurants than most people (I've spent too much of my career travelling), and I've gotten to the point where I start the tip at 20%. It will go up or down depending upon the quality of the service.
One thing I don't do is increase the tip if I'm in one of those places that tells me that they add 18% to the bill for large parties (anywhere from 4-6 or more). If the service is poor, I will complain loudly and vocally to the management. If the service is excellent, I will apologise for not tipping more than they've added to the bill. Frequent enough good restaurants and you'll find that good service is worth the tip. |

I can remember when I thought even 5% was too much. Now I usually tip 15% [i]of the price of the meal[/i] without even thinking about it. Times change. By "price of the meal," I mean without the drinks. $1.39 or more for a soft drink is just too much. I don't want to pay an additional 15% on that already large mark-up.z

Worked as a Bartender in a Japanese Restaurant through College... I tend to be generous-(25%+). If the service sucks, on the other hand, I have no problem paying for the food and leaving $0. Tips are EARNED.

I used to work in a resturant in high school.
Them tips and getting to screw some of the waitresses made it worth while. As a customer I get kinda pissed when I get bad service because I know for the most part I gave a good service. I'm not much on complaining or argueing but if it's real bad I've been known to leave. I do a lot of business lunches and as long as the glass stays full and I/we are not interupted when we are going over something important I'm a happy camper. Very good service will get about 25% to 30%. Average service is double the tax. I reserve the right not to tip or just a buck or so on poor service. |

Whenever I go into a restaurant, I already figure that my tip will be 20%.
If I get extraordinary service, the waiter will get 25%, if I have to look around just [u]once[/u] to get a ice tea refill, the tip will stay at 20%, notwithstanding otherwise exemplary service. I tip 15%-20%, but I would prefer the situation in Europe where they paid the staff correctly.
I would rather have the price of the wages in the entree, I think it is fairer to the waiters. Too often bad food or slow service isn't their fault. |

I guess I'm gonna be the first to admit to it: I'll use 20% as my baseline, and I aint hard to get along with if my servers are anywhere near good they'll get the 20, if they are excellent they'll get 25, if they are hot and show some tit when leaning over to fill a glass or clear salad plates then they get [b]much more[/b]!

It all depends on how the service was. If I dont get my food in the order it was intended (salad, the main dish), or I dont have a drink for a length of time, or dont get checked on, then they dont get a dime. I believe people should work for their money. If they dont please me then they make the $2 and hour or whatever the joint pays them.

10-20% for starters depending on how nice the place is, or doulble the tax. However, much like ETH if I have to look for the waitperson just once, I start knocking that percentage down sometimes all the way to zero. Yes I have done the 1cent tip. And the $25 cents in an upside down glass full of water. very easy to do, its a visual instruction though. Really pisses them off.

This may come as a shock, knowing as you all do how cheap I am when it comes to buying AR stuff.
But I tip well. I've only been a service person once, but I have been around them most of my life (dated a waitress and a hostess in my short love life). I want to be remembered by service people. For good things. That being said, I don't blame service people for bad/overcooked/undercooked food unless they neglected to mention it on the ticket (I've asked to see it once or twice...I don't dine in the kind of establishment where this is frowned upon...remember, I'm cheap!). If they keep the icewater coming, serve with some kind of personality, and do a little hustle getting my food to me while it's still its intended temperature, I make sure my gratitude is spoken in the green folding stuff. We all have to make a living. The fact that I eat at Denny's, Steak & Shake, and Waffle House all indicate that I barely make a living myself, but I don't go breaking someone else's rice bowl if they're doing a good job. I tip 20 percent most of the time, rounding up. I've tipped higher when the service was excellent, and it has been. The WORST service I've ever gotten was at Jerry's Deli on Ventura Blvd (Near Whitsett) back in 1989. The waiter was too busy flirting with the girls to serve us. He got 3 cents. He came out after us and complained about the lousy tip. One of the guys with me explained to him equally loudly about the tip reflecting the service. Funny, the service was better in the early 80's. A regular place that I like the food, I will always leave a buck.
Any place chances I will never be at again I leave nothing unless the service was above and very beyond. |

At restaurants where I am a regular, I tip 25-30% because I get good service and a round of drinks are usually on the house. Anywhere else I start at 20% and adjust it according to the service received. There have been a few occasions where the service was so bad that I left no tip.

My wife waitressed all through college and never lets me forget how it sucks.
But if they are bad, SHE won't let me tip them. Nada. If good, about 20%. We have one place we go to regularly and eat dinner and drink occasionally. Always sit at the bar--the bartender is now our buddy--he gets quite a good tip--35% usually. |

I only eat cheap breakfasts and lunches so the tip is less money but a higer percent usually 20 to 30%

Fortunately for the service industry I haven't mastered complex math. So I came up with this simple formula:
Roughly 20%. I take the total, double it and move the decimal point, or something like that. $26 tab x 2 = 52. So somewhere between $5 and $6. Adjusted to the level of service. If the waitress is really hot I won't move the decimal pint at all... |

Here another ? Do you guys tip at buffets??? We have 2 small children and frequent Old country buffet quite often. My kids sometimes make a mess so i make it a habit of leaving a couple of bucks. I see plenty people leave nothing at buffets. |

I use the Champagne method. Ok, I'll tell you. In Champagne, they arrive at a market price for "perfect" grapes and call that the 100% price. Then, they downrate the grapes offered for sale by the growers to reflect their deviation from the ideal.
So, when I sit down for dinner, the tip starts at 20%. Anything that annoys me or is clearly sub-par service subtracts some percentage from "ideal" service. And, if they go above and beyond - so does the tip. Yes, I'm in the wine business - Midtown Wine & Spirits in Memphis, Tennessee. |
