Went to the chiropractor yesterday, my left shoulder war so high compared to the right, he cracked my back and released the pain, but as soon as I got home it was worse....My regular family doctor will check me out later today, meantime I'm on 500mgs of Skelaxin and Naproxin, whatever the hell they are, they are NOT relieving the pain, I have to sit in a certian position or I am a wasted, crying, helpless kid.  This is unbelievable.

All can say to those of you who never experienced this before, take care of your back, cause with out it you are in a world of shit.

All I can say is that if the chiropractor gave you any excercises to do, DO THEM!  The problem is, when your bones are out of alignment for a long time, your muscles get used to having them that way.  So when they get put back in the right place, it may feel much like the initial injury that you thought would heal on its own over time.  You actually have to re-train your muscles to the correct bone alignment, or they (your muscles) will actually contribute to pulling them (your bones) back out of alignment.  Which is why you also need to go to all those follow up appointments with the chiropractor.

Just my $0.02, but learned from painful experience.

Celt, I'm sure the stuff they gave me is a step above aspirin, so I don't think I can help ya there bro.
This happend b4 in october, it took a few days (10) to subside, what I'ma thinkin is that the previous two trips to the chrptr put my worthless spine back into place...however the laughter + abrupt coughing = muscle spasm and spine sliding out again.  hell I dunno.  I'm just guessing.  Went to the site 9DivDOC reccommended http://www.morinda.com/ and couldn't get into the site...that juice I beleive will help if I can get my paws on some of it.  Heck I'd do just about anythig for some relief.

whirpool on the injury
mild excercise low resistance low impact
aspirin for swelling
avoid caffeine and alcohol

I have posted before about my back situation and I feel your pain.  Are you sure that you don't have any damaged disks?? Because if you do, a chiropractor will only make things worst..you need a specialist.  Also, ask for Soma, it's a muscle relaxant and it works wonders!  Pray you don't have damaged disks, because they can cause major problems.

Good luck.

I have had two back injuries in the past ( 1 upper and 1 lower), and know how bad it can be.  I know how tempting it is to stay motionless in a more comfortable position, but if your doctor says to move and stretch you had better suck it up and do it.  I learned my lesson the hard way.  You should tell your doc that the pain pills just aren't cutting it.

Who tells you about your damaged disks?  The Chiro or the spec.?  My family MD (Today appt.) is an internal spec.so should I ask him any specific questions?  I should ask for X-rays.

forget x-rays, they show you nothing but broken bones. to find out about disks & nerves you must have an MRI, EMG & NCV tests done. these 3 test when done by a NEUROLOGIST will find out whats wrong with you 99% of the time.
trust me been there done that.hope your not as screwed up as i'm right now.out of work 2 months now & counting

When you are healthy again, talk to your Dr. about exercise. When he OK's you, find a Yoga class at your local community college or neighborhood center. I was a HUGE skeptic, but agreed with my girlfriend to give it a try. I stand straighter, am WAY more flexible, and just plain feel better. If you go, do so with an open mind, and don't laugh when everybody sticks their butt up in the air or pulls their ankles up to their bellies. A tip: wear sweat pants and a long sweatshirt.

If you are in that much pain ..and it sounds pretty bad Id take a trip to the ER ..be sure to emphasize that 'YOU ARE IN PAIN"...telling them you are in severe pain is the ticket
you have to make them understand that the pain is so great you cant stand it...
they are obligated to eliviate your pain (at least arround here they are) ...tell them you need something to sleep or work to take care of the pain and right now...be firm but polite but be insistant that they take care of your pain.... sounds like there is a lot of swelling on the disks  pressing against the nerves ...and they are right xrays arent going to show that I highly recommend ice on the swelling asap ....and aspririn or an anti inflamatory get that swelling down before you attempt any excercise ...then ice the area after excercise avoid heat to swelling it only makes it worse

I thought I had a bum shoulder, went and had xrays, my family doctor treated me for it for a month, cortizone (sp) shots in my shoulder heavy duty pain killers.  My shoulder and arm hurt worse than anything I had ever felt in my whole life.

After mucho complaining he finally sent me to a specialist and it ended up I had a pinched nerve in my neck.

I went through about a month of traction therapy, and they gave me a rig that I can do traction at home.  I finally got better, but I still have alittle numbness in my arm, but the pain is gone.  When I feel the ache in my shoulder coming on I just do some traction and it goes away.  If you hurt anything like I did I feel for ya brother.

Went to the Doc about two hrs ago, he said that after hearing me splain everything, that is DEFINITLEY MUSCULAR and he doesnt want to order an MRI unless there are certian telltale signs.  So, he gave me valium and another one for daytime so I can work, my chair at work is really comfy, the chiroptr on the other hand wants to do a full MRI asap.  I will hold off for awhile, I'm more apt to go with my family MD's opinion for now.  I'll make it ok.

do like DNRA said and get the test done. if your doc just does internal med, then forget him.and go to a neurologist, he's the only one that can really tell what going on with your pain & maybe nerves?

what my internal med doc thought was a cervical whiplash & strained back from and accident. really turn out to be 3 herniated disks in my neck w/ radialopathy(something about nerve damage because disks are pushing inward against cervical cord?) and 2 in my back doing the same.trying to explain in lay man terms.

mark twain said he had a bad cold once and a friend said he should go home and drink a bottle of bourbon on his way home he ran into another friend who told him the same thing so when he got home he drank two bottles.  they didn't cure his cold but he reported that he felt a lot better.  for what it's worth i recommend jack daniels.

Watch the meds.  Some muscle relaxants (it was flexeril in my case) can make some people vegetable-like till they wear off.

If you need these, don't drive or do any other dangerous activity, especially if there is any impairmnent.  Avoid combining the meds with alcohol.

If you need that much relief you may need to be off work.

Years ago, I took some flexeril & could barely keep my head off the desk.  Fighting it was such a chore I stopped taking it & used other stuff.

If you get pains or tingly feelings radiating out to your legs or arms, be sure to tell the MD and in that case I would not go near a Chiro unless the MD recommends it.

Haven't heard you mention the smokes.  Hope the craving is gone.  Congratulations!!

Sorry to hear about your troubles Satcong. Some good advice here. Get the tests, try to take it easy on the heavy duty pain killers, you'll get to like 'em too much - much better than beer. If you don't have any herniated discs or impinged nevrves, start excercising as soon as you can. Get the doc to give you a referral to a physical therapist. It hurts like a bastard to start, but once you're into it, you'll feel better. Trick is, once you start, don't stop, and fall back into bad habits, like getting your workouts doing 12 oz curls. Hope you feel better soon.

MRI is not all its cracked up to be.  It helps a lot if you have numbness and tingling in the arm or leg, but it seldom if ever reveals the source of spine pain.  I'm an MD and I send people to chiropractors all the time. Chiropractic treatment CAN help if you have a bad disc. If chiro doesn't work, you might want to look at massage therapy.  I agree with the assertion that it is important to keep moving. Be careful with Soma.  One thing you might want to look at is the medial branch block technique, also called "facet rhizotomy."  This is the best option I've seen over the last ten years or so for neck or back pain that doesn't go away after six weeks or so.
