Market is about 35% undervalue...good deals to be had. Especially for the future. SO, happy hunting for you guys. If you've never gotten into the market before..today is your day...just do it! Best time to buy is when you're at the bottom...this is that.

The market will continue to falter until investor confidence is restored.  I think it still has a way to go before it hits bottom.

Agreed....funny though.  Two years ago, everyone thought they could run their own fund, tech heavy with no cover for downside...laughing at those holding bond funds.  It makes for a harsh lesson for those retiring w/i 5 years.

In a bear market, many people forget the basic premise of buying low and selling high.  For those who got in late, now is the time to dollar cost average.  For those not in it....get in man.  You can never really time the bottom perfectly, but there are bargains out there for certain!

Exactly. Very cash heavy. Continious EPS growth. Great market penatration. P/E of 9.85 and more importantly, they did not have Arthur Anderson for an auditor.

The market may be still overpriced in P/E terms, but you can't deny it's oversold.  It's more oversold now than the week after the 9/11 attack, and volatility is higher as well. I am looking forward to the big short-covering rally, it'll be fun to watch.

Anyway, have courage.  After all the President said [b]"The fundamental business of the country is on a sound and prosperous basis."

Verizon did at one time have Anderson but got rid of them.     That is GTE did before they merged with Bell Atlantic.      I can't remember if it was before or after merger, probably before but there was an attempt to buy/merge with Worldcom.     The stock has always gone back up in the past.     Been with them since 79 and have seen people almost double there money in just a few years on 1 occasion that I can remember.

You guys are making me feel better about my 401k right now. I'm a 20 year Verizon employee with most of my stuff in stock. The last 2 years have been rough. I hope it comes back strong.  should I leave most of it in stock or move half around? We all fear another Enron. BTW it dropped $4 yeaterday.

Gopher,

Verizon stock dropped due to lack of confidence in the entire telecom industry.... not company specific.

As another Verizon employee, I've watched how the company's been expanding and it's been primarily utilizing the existing infrastructure, as opposed to WorldCom which tried to expand into every field at once (a problem in addition to their accounting scheme).  I've seen problems with WorldCom's service the entire time I've been working as a COT.

In fact, I've always based my own decisions on who I should go with LD, features, etc based on what I see at work... if people are complaining about it, I avoid it.

But, then again, I have another 30 years to go with the company before I will consider retirement... I can't stand not working.

Buying 50k shares of worldcomm as we speak (WCOEQ), playing a hunch, buy point is .14 a share.

If it hits .25 a share today I will buy another 150k shares.

Keep your fingers crossed .

Larry, I am sure most people on this board could scrape up enough to buy 50k shares of worldcomm, it is at .19 a share at this moment.

I have a personal trader that I use to make market orders for me, but I also stick lots of little shares in the aformentioned

Come on, 10k is not going to break anyone financially, and if you can, get your head around the potential rewards.

Worldcomm has great fundamentals, huge physical plants and a great product.

You might not see your returns for a few years, but going from .19 a share to $35-40.00 a share might make all that right, wouldn't you say?

What guns do you want to put up as collateral?

so suppose I wanted to take $200 bucks and buy some of this world com shit, sort of like putting $200 in a slot machine at a casino
How exactly would I go about doing this? I'm completely ignorant. Would it be best to do it via a website? When I search on fidelity.com to try to find the symbol for worldcom, a bunch of different symbols come up, which one do I want? Is this as simple as going to a website and opening an account, then ordering a buy on a particular symbol? Anything I should watch out for (other than the money dissapearing as the stock becomes even more worthless--remember I'm considering this like buying lotto tickets) to keep from getting screwed by whoever handles the buying of the stock for me? How do I do this?

I like it due to the fact that it has gone up and down on a regular basis. Nothing I would expect to shoot up, just something to put money into for a year or so and keep an eye on. Not going to make a killing, but at that price you can get into it for not a lot of money and make a little profit short term.

I thought they were going to file for bankruptcy..?  Certainly a "quick buy" on everyones part would help solidify the company, but is also one hell of a potential risk, unless your plans are to dump it when it hits $1.19...  thus a $50k profit!

Certainly a smart move on the part of those that can afford to play...  Personally, I would take the risk, but have nothing in reserves, and not enough liquid collateral to make it happen at this point.  Everything we have, has been invested in our home.

I should point out that our home has booked a $37k increase in just 3 years!  For us "poor folks", living in a tiny community, that's pretty damn good!

bankruptcy is fine, alls that does it gets them out form under their creditors, looks like they are carrying 30 billion in debt, with that wiped out, or bought off, worldcomm will be near unstoppable as far as veriozon and any of the baby bells are concerned.

Mortgage the house Tim, it is the only sane thing to do .

$10k would break me as I am not working at the moment.  Everyone is not as well off as you are.  We know, we hear about it all the time.  I did just buy $50 worth at buy and hold.  I also figure it will go back up.  If I get working in the next few weeks I will buy more Worldcom, depending on what their stock is doing.

snipped from Motley Fool....

We have received a number of questions from people who want to know whether or not buying some shares in bankrupt companies would be a good idea, "since they are so cheap." The answer is an unequivocal "no." In almost every bankruptcy, the equity shareholders end up with nothing since they come at the end of the line of creditors..............In the last few years, precious few companies have emerged with any equity for existing shareholders. You'd be better off just buying lottery tickets than playing the bankruptcy sweepstakes. These companies are cheap for a reason: They're broke.

*********************************************

This is gambling folks not investing.  If you have the money to loose, go for it, enjoy yourself and kiss your hard earned goodbye.

WCOM may emerge from bankruptcy intact, but it will be owned by the new creditors, not the equity investors.

WorldCom's assets are greater than their debt's. And they will emerge an intact company with the current shareholders.

View Quote

Yes, their assets are greater than their debt, so what?  That does not mean current share holders will have any equity in the restructured company.  The big, post bankruptcy creditors take precedence over all others.  Investors are dead last in line and will be left holding the bag.

In effect, WCOM is selling the current investors lost equity to the new creditors.  That sux, but it's the way bankruptcy laws work.
