I shoot on Fridays at my range because very few people will be there. This week was a guy shooting way-the-hell the other side of the benches with a 50 cal. For about two hours we shared the range with nothing more than range courtesys. As I packed up, he asked me what kind of groups I was getting with my AR. As we started talking about guns, he would pull out of the bed of his truck almost any style we talked about. I told this guy that I needed to bring him home to make me look good to my wife (in comparison on my gun expenditures). He said he spends every cent of his money on scopes,guns and ammo- no savings, no stocks and no real estate. He must have had 50 grand in gear in the bed of his truck(it was safe though, he had it covered with cardboard so you couldn't see it!). How many of you use this investment plan?

I don't think he lived in his truck, but he did mumble something about his wives not being very understanding.

The only way this makes sense as an investment plan is if you are anticipating another and more severe ban, or you can hold them for a few generations unfired until they become classics and have antique value.

Example:

The Remington Mohawk 10C my dad bought me in 1977 for $50 now has a collector value of about $225. This is about %350. The accountant types could give you a better value to time ratio on that investment. By contrast my parents bought my childhood home in 1972 for $65k It recently sold for $550k. Had my parents not sold it in 1983 and held till present their profit margin would have been about %900.

There are other things in life that should have more priority. Without any savings and money to fall back on, if he gets sick he'd have to sell some of his collections fast, since he'd have to price them to sell he'd get less for them. As much as I like my collection, it's not the center of my universe, there should be some balance.

With the stock market in a downward spiral, guns are definitely a better investment now. I stopped looking at my Fidelity account, it causes too much pain. My company stock is falling just as fast as the market, but IMHO my guns are maintaining their value if not increasing a little each day.

Sounds good to me. As far as I know, none of my guns have lost their value and they have probably gone up. My investments have dropped like a rock. Probably the same value as they were 5-6 years ago.

Btw, if you want investments, buy class III guns.

I think I'm a bit more disciplined than that, but I do often think measure things by guns i.e. get a bill in a restaurant in Manhatten I think "Damn that was 1000 rounds of Fiocchi 45!"

Although guns are one of the few items of personal property that do not go down in value dramatically, most of the stuff I have won't ever go up in value, absent some kind of ban on the firearm involved.

In order to be considered an investment, you have to be willing to sell it. I can see having the basics (a shotgun, a carry handgun, and a rifle) covered before investing. I can even see the man with no arms buying ONE (singular) before building up savings. $189.47 should not put that big a dent in your savings anyway. But telling yourself that your guns are investment is just rationalizing unless 1) you're willing to sell them 2a) you keep them in NIB condition or 2b) there aren't no more being made (such as preban assault weapons, transferrable machine guns, etc...)

I spend just about all my money on guns,ammo, and accesories for all of them.. but i'm only 20 and still live at home and don't pay any bills [:D] I already have 11 guns in 2 years since I bought my first gun(benelli nova) on my 18th b-day and I just turned 20 about one month ago... My dad owns his own company and its out in the county with plenty of land so I have my own private range [:D] i'm spoiled like crazy too ... oh well might as well take advantage while it lasts!

M4-Kinda thought so myself. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but decided not to laugh at somebody with two benches full of 50 cal. stuff and one bench full of 308 tactical stuff!
