The other night on my way to work I was surfing through the radio stations when all of a sudden I came across one playing the song "Word Up" by Cameo. Now I've never liked this song before, but all of sudden it was like I was back at the Disney Barracks, US Army Armor School, Ft Knox KY, in the summer of 1985. It was really kind of weird the memory that came back; A sweltering summer day, sitting in the PX area where they had a video jukebox playing this song, hanging out with buddies from my platoon, playing pinball, and hearing that song while just being glad to gotten out of earshot of the DI for awhile. Nothing too special overall, I guess it was just the clarity of the memory that surprised me. Probably for the first time since that summer of 16 years ago, I sat through that whole annoying song in it's entirity, just relishing the memories of days gone by. Anyhow, it's kind of interesting how something so otherwise mundane can trigger such powerful, clear memories...

Mariachi music.
Whenever I hear it, it reminds me of a particular evening in TJ.
Calling it quits after an evening of club hopping my friend and I decided to head home to Camp Pendleton. When we stepped outside there was a freshly killed young man sprawled out against the curb. His throat had been slashed and his blood was pooling against the curb so fast it was like a fast moving high tide. A few seconds later the authorities arrived and covered the body with the usual white sheet.
Along with what appeared to be the Federales there were some other authorities (not TJ cops either) I've never seen before, most notable of them all being a 300 pound Mexican man with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder. I remember it looked like a toy on him, he was so large.
A man in the crowd claimed that the victim (a young Mexican) was a Marine. I don't know if that was true or not, but he smiled when he said it and there was a large crowd so I didn't stick around for details. Anyhow we didn't get far before being stopped by the mucho corrupto TJ police. My friend decided to take a leak in a alley and was observed doing so. After threats of weekend jail, I bribed the nice officer who escorted me to the nearest ATM and I took out about a gazillion pesos which turned out on my statement to be $85.00(I had no clue as to what the exchange rate was.) Never had any other problems in TJ 'cept for this one time. OOPS..except for the time I got into it with some Mexican wanna be gang members.

Here comes the rain again song by the Eurythmics, reminded me of my last day at Ft. Sill, was killing time until it was time to catch my flight in the EM club and this song was playing on the Video jukebox.

Sure does. And a memory I would like to forget.

1983, 21 years old. Went to a party at the clubhouse at my friend's apartment complex. Drinking heavily, DJ's rocking the house, major rager. The DJ cranks Romeo Void's "Never Say Never" and we're all on the floor pounding beers and dancing with the women. By this time, I'm in double vision mode. Majorly wasted. So, I'm on the floor and this girl comes up to me and starts dancing and shaking her assets in my face and all that good stuff. I'm thinking, "Hmmm... I wonder if I'll get some tonight?" So, next thing I know we're making out on the dance floor and she says, "Let's go somewhere where we can be alone". This happened in the span of less than 10 minutes. Real quick like. So, I take her to the men's locker room in the clubhouse and we start doing the nasty. About a 1/2 hour later, by bro comes in, sees us getting down on the bench next to the lockers and just starts laughing his head off. "I'm thinking, what the hell is he laughing for? At least I'm getting some". So, after that the girl gives me her number and bails. By this time I'm stumbling over the place and banging my shins on things, total goner. So, the next day I'm thinking I should do the right thing and call the girl. So, I call her and she says come over and we'll party. So I get over there and lo and behold, she LOOKS like the singer in Romeo Void.

An event I would like to forget.

As for me, strange enough Amadeus by Falco. Makes me think of a girl friend [who happened to like that song] I wish i'd never lost! Her father had *issues* with me, so to speak. I guess i'll go mope in a corner now.

Yeah, every time I hear "In America" and "Still in Saigon" by The  CDB, I choke. Or something by CCR

Cannot hear stairway to heaven without crying, it was my fathers favorite song, and I remember endless nights hearing that song over and over and over.

another one you may not have heard of is "house of the rising sun" by frijid pink, I cry for that one too, as I remember hooking up my stereo in his hospital room and playing that song, and stairway, a lot for him, just a few days before he died.

For my mom, it was Neil diamond's "forever in blue jeans", I just found that CD the other night, and gave it to my sister. I can't listen to it.
