And it starts free falling and you jumped right before it crashed to the ground, would you be ok?

Nope, but if you silently fart you can make coworkers angry.

I bet Gary Busey's farts smell like Jolly Ranchers and fermented peanut butter.  No real reason.

Are there beans or no beans in said elevator?
Is there a treadmill inside the elevator?
Is the elevator made by Glock?

But the jump wont matter either way.

No lay on the ground and flatten yourself out as much as possible.

You should just jump out as it starts to fall.

I assumed as much but I'm not thinking that would influence the smell all that much.

Ummm, I think you could IF you could jump high enough and fast enough AND could stay suspended LONG enough to overcome the initial stoppage (impulse).  However....you must come down and again resume further problems like COMPACTION of materials....which have become ever smaller and dwelling in YOUR space.  Hard to avoid at best.  Perhaps it would be the same as jumping from a falling aircraft JUST before impact.....?????.  Of course you must fall anyway.  Perhaps at a slower speed.  At any rate....pass me that bottle yer sipp'n.

You'd be fine until you landed.

You might be worse off by doing that. I would say lay flat on your back, pad the back of your head and neck with wadded up clothing to minimize the compression, closed head injury and spinal injury which will undoubtedly occur.

I don't see why not.  Same is also true in airplane crashes which is why stewardesses ask all passengers to limber up during takeoff announcements.

This, and during the fall you are going to be "weightless" in relation the the box you are inside of that is falling.

Even if you jumped right before the elevator hit, you would still have the same momentum. Your momentum doesn't magically stop if you jump. If that were true then the same situation would apply to an airplane in a nosedive. We all know how that would turn out.

If you could jump hard enough to overpower a fatal fall, you would kill yourself by jumping.

In other words, no. The tiny change in relative velocity your jump would make would be tiny compared to the overall velocity of an elevator in prolonged freefall.

You might manage to hit the roof momentarily before you splatter the floor, though.

My apologies. To make amends, think of this. What if there were airbags in the floor that deployed right before touchdown?

What do you do about  elevators that fall...up?

Traction Elevators freefall up, because the counterweight is 40% heavier than the car.  This is unless the car is heavily loaded. If you lift the brake with no power, the car will try like hell to hit the overhead, depending upon how much time it has to gain speed.
