I want to buy a travel trailer, approximately 20 to 24 feet long. I found a 1994 19 foot "Chateau" (Thor Industries / Four Winds is the current manufacturer) yesterday with an interior layout that will work okay for a family of four. This particular trailer looks to be in very nice condition.
My tow vehicle is a Ford F-150 Supercrew with 4.6l engine. The truck is 4X4 with automatic transmission, 3.55 limited slip rear end, 16 inch tires, and was delivered with the optional class III tow package which includes a transmission cooler. [I have already considered a temp gage for the transmission fluid.]
I won't be trading anytime soon.
The trailer weighs about 3100 pounds empty; figure 1000 pounds of junk for a week of travel with my darling wife and two kids (girly girls).
The tow capacity of the truck is about 6300 pounds according to the owners manual. The Trailer Life website shows 6600 pounds for this vehicle.
I want to be able to tow through the Rockies without getting ground down to rediculously low speeds at high altitude or on steep grades. I've got exactly zero experience pulling a travel trailer, so my first question is -
Am I going to hate a trailer like this?
I know I can pull the trailer, but the question is whether the performance is unacceptable, poor, okay, fair, good, acceptable, pretty good, outstanding, or spectacular. (Or scary.)
I know how to calculate empty weight, gross weight, combined weight and so on - what I need is practical information based on your experience, not a rehash of what the manufacturers manuals or the manuals at the RV dealer claim.
I want to know if towing a trailer of this type and weight will be reasonably easy, or if it will suck.
