All summer the weather is hot and sunny. It rains all winter. Traffic and the cost of livind is bad in King County, where most of the jobs are. We are a shall issue CPL state, you may own suppressors, but may not (be caught) fire(ing) them, as it is illegal. AOWs are leagal, no other NFA. We have a waiting period on handgun purchases from ffls, but no restrictions on private sale. The liberals run the state, but it is no where near as bad as CA. I dont know about cost of a house, but epect to shell out money near seattle. The eastern side is a farming area, like OR or ID, but it is very poor in comparison. I live south of Olympia, btw. I hope I helped a little bit.

WA doesn't allow class III stuff. OR, however, does, and you can buy switchblades here, too!
You can't pump your own gas here. We have no sales tax, but WA has no state income tax. |

We usually don't like Californians moving in but any AR-15 type is welcome.
There are really two different states here. East and West of the Cascades. West is liberal with high local taxes. East is conservative and has a lower cost of living. People are friendly. Lots of open spaces and a great gun culture outside of King County. The traffic is very bad on the West side. It rains a lot but never gets real cold. The East side is dry and also mild, except for Spokane. The Cascades are some of the most beautiful country in the US. Many places to go where you don't see anyone else. Great gun shows with no restrictions. You can rent a table and sell your own guns without paper. You can buy guns from another individual without paper and be legal. On the East side housing is very affordable. A nice 3000 FT2 house can cost less than 200K. No income tax. I moved up from Florida a few years ago and have enjoyed living on the east side. The spring, summer and fall are great. Winters are sometimes gloomy and overcast but is not a killer. I belong to a great shooting range. No hassles and sometimes you have to stop shooting because elk will wander nearby. I'll be moving back to Florida next year and you can buy my 3500 ft2 house for $220K |

I can only speak about the eastside. Dry, and more Dry. We get less then 10 inches a year. I wouldn't say the east side is poor, we put money into land and tractors, not houses and BMWs. East side is around 1 million and west side around 5 million. Traffic what traffic? West side takes all the tax money and builds more lanes to 5. No income tax, and Oregon has no sale tax. My folks address is on Stateline Rd. You can figure out how much I like taxes. West side enviros are trying to play over here, with the salmon and air quality. But it does beat the hell out the Bay Area.

**I'm only going to state specifics about the greater Seattle area**
Careful about Biotech here in Seattle. Our largest biotech firm that the politicians gave a huge tax break to and perhaps even gave money to help them build their new facilities is bailing out. I can't recall the name of the company at the moment and it's been several weeks since I saw the news article about it. Traffic, sucks, there is no other way to put it. The median cost of a house in the area is now appx $245K. It rains on many days, especially from November through April. A cold day here is 50 degrees. I kid you not about that. I moved here from MI almost 4 years ago and the only time I put on anything approaching a heavy coat is when the rain is going sideways or I am headed up into the mountains. Shorts all year round can work here. The people here think the gates of hell have opened when the temperature is more than 81 degrees out. Again coming from MI on our hottest days this year I though the temp was low 80s tops, nope 92 they claimed. And I HATE hot weather. Taxes, the sales tax is very high, there is the state tax and local levies are tacked onto that. The King county sales tax is what about 9% now? The West side voters, where the liberals and socialist have congregated, who unfortunetely control the state NEVER met a tax that the didn't like. The politicians don't listen, witness Safeco field we vote and say no, they build it anyway with our money. We have two of the worst senetors in the world, Patty I'll rip off the Air Force to make Boeing a buck even though they moved the headquarters out it'll make the Boeing workers think I like them Murry, and Maria, I'm spending all of my time fundraising instead of legislating to pay myself back the loans I made to my campaign so I can claim I financed it myself Cantwell. They are both antis. No class III, you can buy a supressor (if you live in King county you will most likely have to take the back door corporation route to get it though) but you cannot use it in the state. It's an old law and a bad one but it's not worth opening the RCW (revised code of Washington) to get it off of the books chances are we gunnies would lose more than we'd gain unless we have control of the state political bodies. The CPL (concealed pistol license) is shall issue and with it your 5 day handgun wait is waived. If you have questions ask away. Washington State and the Seattle area are both very well represented here on AR15.Com. In fact I think the radical libs would wet themselves if they knew how many of us there are. [}:D] |

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Anything else that comes to mind would certainly be appreciated.
Basically, my number one motivation for getting out of here are the firearms laws. My first choice was Nevada (best laws around AFAIK), but there are few jobs in my field there. Arizona, especially Tucson is a growing biotech area and has pretty damn decent gun laws, but Arizona doesn't appeal to me for two reaons: 1) Heat. I grew up in the inland CA valley, so I'm accustomed to 95-105+ temps in the summer with low humidity late may through late september, but the idea of Phoenix where it hits 100 in march and during the summer might see a low temperature of 90 is too extreme for me. 2) Illegal immigrants. This is one of the reasons why I want out of CA. I'm tired of people who are here illegally being courted to. The asshole socialist politicans take money from honest workers and buy socialist votes with it from illegals. I understand and empathize with their plight and desire for a better life, but they are dragging this state/country down as they flood here. AZ has lots of those. Yuck I like the Bay Area generally. Nice climate, lots of jobs and things to do. Traffic is bad but I've adapted to it a lot better than I thought I would. Just avoid running errands before 6 PM on weekdays and everything's fine. I've driven through Los Angeles during commute times and it honestly blew my mind with its severity. San Francisco's is also notorious, I won't even drive there (haha..as if I have a reason for visiting that twisted depraved communist hellhole). As long as it's not as bad as LA or San Fran I think I can deal with it. So far WA seems like it offers much of what I like here in CA, with the added bonus of being able to buy Evil Black Rifles and get a concealed pistol permit. I'm used to paying around 8% sales tax, so as far as I'm concerned the lack of a state income tax more than makes up for it. As far as politicians go, well I'll put Boxer and Fineswine up against anyone's (except Hitlary) for the title of "worst". As far as I'm concerned, I can only go up from here. The girlfriend wants to pursue her Master's, so that will probably happen at U.Washington, which provides a rough area for where we'd relocate to. Housing sounds pretty pricey, but right now for the 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath...1600-1900 square foot rental we're in right now runs $2100 a month...so, like our politicians, kinda hard to go anywhere but better. The seasons are pretty mild up here.Sounds like you'll be living on the west side for your job and school requirements.
Like everyone said,the leadership is liberal and dominated by greater Seattle area urbane thought. They do like to take from the productive and give to the unproductive,but when they really start to mess with commen sense,gunrights type issues the silent conservative majority more often than not flexes their considerable muscle and keeps the crazier nonesense from being enacted. The entire I5 corridore(Olympia too Everret)has some of the worst traffic that I would put up against any gridlock in the world,but it only effects you if your living far from work and/or traveling in rushhour.I can generally avoid it by picking my spots and finding the road less traveled. As far as expenses,generally its more expensive north and in Seattle and gets more affordible as you go south.Some one mentioned that the median price for a home was $245,000.Probably in the Seattle area.As you go south to say Kent, Auburn area you can knock off 30-40 grand.Go down to Tacoma and Olympia you can find a respectable house for $170-180,000.The UW also has a nice extension campus in Tacoma. So you've got options.All the areas up and down the corridor have their pro's and con's,aswell as there own flavor,but all are within an hour-hour and a half of eachother. |

Immunex was just bought by Amigen (sp?), they just built a major lab between downtown and Magnolia. The lab is almost finished, and will be open and working, who will be owners and operators is not quite settled yet. In fact I think the radical libs would wet themselves if they knew how many of us there are. I should buy depends stock. Every time they see my Black Monte Carlo with my ar15 license plate brackets makes [b]ME[/b] smile! I always tell folks one weather forecast. high of 70, Low of 40, partly cloudy chance of showers. Take a light jacket and you will be fine! Cmon on up, there is plenty of good shooting here. CCW is your friend! |

Another great thing about the Puget Sound area...good beer!(though I know there's a few decent breweries in Northern CA) And there are plenty of Biotech jobs here. The traffic really bites though, and taxes are going to take a big jump to "fix it"...whether we want them or not.

This area is pretty great. I live near Seattle. Traffic sucks, but if you do a little research you can get around it. If you work on the East Side (Bellevue, Redmond, etc) live on the East Side. If you work North, live North. Try to avoid having to get on I-5 or I-405 to commute. You may think traffic is bad down there, but when you are moving, you are moving. It's usually hard to go the speed limit on those two freeways up here.
The weather is one of the things I like most about this place. I went back to Ohio to attend Bulletfest III and visit family. It was about 93° with 99% humidity. Come back here and there are a couple 90° days, but with 24% or less humidity. As far as illegal immigrants, not sure. This is a very diverse place, but not sure a lot are illegal. I actually like it. Culturally it's probably similar to CA. I haven't been there, so can't say for sure. Cost of living seems pretty high to me, but coming from OH/PA, I'd imagine anywhere would seem high to me ;) I do hear that it's comparible to CA though. If you possibly can, find some time to come up and take a little vacation here to check it out. I'm sure we could get a small get-together organized. I haven't met any of the local ar15'ers yet, but that's because I'm lazy and haven't made it to the Friday night Black Rifle League yet ;) Oregon might be something for you to look at too. I lived in Portland for a while. It was a slightly smaller urban area, with slightly less traffic. Not sure about biotechs down there though. Take your time deciding. Do the research. Ask the questions. Try to visit places you are considering if you can. Good luck :) |

If we move, it's going to be sooner rather than later, and as her extended job/internship is just about over we're both going to have some free time this summer. I'd be interested in meeting some of the AR15.com crew up there. Probably early August. I don't own a real AR15 though, and I would be too embarrassed to take my fab-10 out of state. I could bring the sig sauers though. Thanks for the tips about traffic. I've been poking around a bit on the net and you guys certainly seem to be right about the problems. Apparently the I-5/405 interchange is the 3rd worst bottleneck in the nation. I've seen the number 1 at the height of its glory (it's in LA), so if this is anything like that, it scares me. If they'd hurry up and invent non-polluting personal jetpacks already, things would be fine. As far as the immigrants issue goes, it's not that I mind immigrants, I mind the influence they exert on the state's politics. The notion that people who are here illegally can influence my life both politically and financially is very irritating. I'm very excited about the idea of getting out of here, but somewhat apprehensive about picking up and moving to a new place. I spent my first 19 years within the same area of a 240,000 person city (Bakersfield, Ca), so the concept of moving to an entirely different state is quite alien. Headpulper: Wheat beer on tap from the Sierra Nevada brewery in Chico is one of the tastiest things I've ever had. mmmm wheat beer CavVet: You mean people other than politicans and celebrities are trusted with the means to protect themselves there? Move here and buy my house. If you own one in SF, you'll be able to buy 1.5 to 2 houses here for the same price. Median home price is around $300K now, IIRC.
Biotech is a little tight now because of the lack of venture capital. Still, it's better than software by a long shot. I would suggest moving into Snohomish County instead of King County. Cheaper housing, and the county isn't quite as badly run -- they're still thieves, just not as nasty. |

I agree with almost all the previous info. I would just like to add that Seattle SUCKS. I live on the Olympic peninsula. That's the far west of WA state. We are on the other side of the Puget sound from Seattle. It is mostly rural, with some real towns, small cities. It's one of the most awesome places I've been to or even read about. We don't live in the mountians(most folks live near the water) but we are surrounded by mountains. Out here (north Olympic peninsula) we get twice as many sunny days as Seattle and half the annual rain fall. Except for the HOH rain forest which gets 100 times as much rain as anywhere else. (Weird, 'cus it's only like 50 miles from here). This is the best weather in the country,IMO. I can't stand the heat, but I don't like being cold all year(and not Minnesota cold either). Here we get 4 actual seasons. Not too hot, not too cold, and almost all year the weather is just right. Folks come here from all over the world, to fish, backpack, kayak, sail, whalewatch, hunt, etc. I suggest you find work first. Employment here is tighter than housing. If you can afford a house in kali then you can get the same or more here. Then find a house near work. Did anyone mention that the traffic in Seattle is really, really bad? Like L.A., N.Y. , Boston, or Atlanta bad. Maybe worse. In the rural areas, away from the Seattle-tacoma area, there is no traffic. None. I recommend the Olympic peninsula, there is no better standard of living anywhere in the USA, IMO. That's why I came here. If you happen to see the new movie with jennifer lopez,I don't remember the name, in it she flees to a victorian town in Michigan. Well it was shot here in the town I live in. Michigan never looked that good. The movie is a piece of @$%! but in the background you can see what where talking about. Those buildings, mountains, tress, and water views in the movie we see everyday. Mountain ranges and water in every direction. No one here gets bored with the view. |

It rains all the time.
The trees are fake. All the rivers and the sound is polluted. Mt. Rainier is going to blow up. The traffic totally sucks. Seattle is a company town... the guy who can't get it up and the "Lazy B" run the joint. Housing is WAY WAY over priced. The majority of people on the west side are all too PC! Is not legal to own full auto. You can have a suppressor, but have to leave the state to use it. It USED to be a great place, but then folks from California and New York moved here! Have a nice day. It's funny. When I first escaped to WA from IL, I felt insanely free and happy. Taxes were soooooo much lower, cost of living was too, the "gun culture" out here allowed me to relax, the scenery was great, and the wages were high.
Now, seven years later, I can't even find job listings to apply to, taxes have skyrocketed, nobody can afford housing, and, well, ok, the gun culture is still as good as it used to be. One out of four isn't bad. |
