Always a lot of discussion about how many weapons and how many thousand rounds of ammo folks, have ... but what about body armor?  I would like to get some for me and the wife for the SHTF stash.

What do I need to consider, and any recommendations would be appreciated.

Was looking for something a little less bulky ...

Like the caliber of that sword, though.

Thanks for the (serious) reply SGB.

I did a little online research last night and figured on a IIIA vest with either ceramic or metal inserts to bring it to level IV (still can't get the image out of my mind from Black Hawk Down where the guy got shot in the back after removing his rear plate).  Just me, but in Desert Storm as a tank commander I wore both the lightweight tankers vest (splinter protection vest I guess) as well as the heavy body armor vest on top.  Luckily nothing really came close.

Cannot decide between brands.  Galls seems reasonable as a source interms of price.  Anyone have any brand or source recommendations that will sell to non-LEO?

Thanks.

If price is not a problem, Safariland makes some of the best body armor on the market right now.  However, the products from Galls are a great value.

Yeah, Safariland supposedly makes good stuff, but from what I heard they don't sell armor to civies.

No stupid martian he - look at that brain bucket!  I wonder if I can get one of those that doubles as a broom.

Try www.bulletproofme.com.  They have police surplus armor at a decent price.  I just got a IIIA Point Blank Zylon vest that is only about 4 pounds!  The new stuff is amazing.  Law-abiding citizens are welcome there.

Any ideas on tactical vests?  I like the idea of built in pouches, although the ones I see have POLICE or SHERIFF sewed on.  Would need that removed, obviously.
