Home invasion victim fights back
One suspect's dead, the other wounded

(7/14/02) — A Houston apartment resident says he was forced to shoot two men he thought were intruders Saturday night. What began as an apparent home invasion in southwest Houston quickly turned deadly when the victim became the aggressor.
The gunshots rang out late into the night, two of them, fired quickly and with fatal results. Preliminary investigation suggest a resident at the apartment had a gun in his hand when the trouble began.
"He heard a knock at the door. He looked through the window and didn't recognize a young male outside," said HPD's Sgt C.B. Douglas.
The knocking continued, and when the homeowner opened the door slightly, he says he noticed two men, asking things he simply didn't understand.
"Before he could respond, they forced the door open further, pushing him back. He said he had his weapon in his hand and he fired two shots, striking both men," explained Sgt. Douglas.
One died at the scene. Another was rushed to the hospital.
Neighbors watched on as the resident prepared to go downtown, for questioning by HPD's homicide division. Police say his wife and two children weren't home at the time of the shooting, and initial reports revealed no weapons on the men who were shot.
Sgt. Douglas told Eyewitness News, "At this time, I have not found any weapon on either suspect. We're still searching the scene."
Investigators say the unidentified resident has lived at the complex for about two years, and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
