What does horse manure weigh per yard? My mom borrowed it to pick up some fertilizer to till in a field. I let her use a 3k gvw lbs trailer every year to pick up a few wheel borrow loads in. Then my guys off load it for her. Now I've got a trailer now with at least 3 1/2 yards in it. Axel is bent. On first glance two welds cracked at the frame in the tongue. I'm still not sure how she got home.

A guy that should have fucking known better loaded it. I started working for him years ago in construction. He owns a ranch now and I own my own demolition company. It will be fun calling my old boss to yell at him for a dip shit move.

That matters alot.

IIRC 1 cubic yard of soil = ~ 1,000 pounds

Dry it's like 1:1
moist its like 1:1.1
wet its like 1:1.2-1.4

not sure about manure though you coulod figure its prolly slightly less dense

The density of horse manure is about 63 lb/ft3.

Presuming they're refering to 'fresh' wet manure...

1 yd3 = 27 ft3

So if you had 3.5 cubic yards...

Weight = 3.5 yd3 * 63 lb/ft3 * 27 ft3/yd3 = 5953.5 lbs

Yeah, that would bend the axle, LOL.

compost is about 1000lbs/yard

cow manure is heavier than horse manure.

Used to have a horse manure removal business, I know my shit.

You can always take a quart container, fill it, then weigh it to determine the actual density of the manure you have. Remember to tare the weight of the container out and try to get the compaction close to the compaction of the pile.

1 Qt. = 0.0334 cu.ft. or 0.00124 yd^3

So take the weight of the quart of manure and divide it by 0.00124 to arrive at the density in lbs. per cubic yard, or "yard" as the layperson calls it.

After measuring it out, it came to almost 6 yards of horse shit. With this shit being an estimated 700 lbs a yard, the trailer and shit load totaled 5,500 lbs. That is nearly twice the shit that its rated for, and around 2,500 lbs more shit than its legal road limit. Now that's a lot of shit my friends.

Moral of the story is, If someone is going to put shit in your trailer, make sure they know how much shit is too much. Trailers are designed to hold a specific amount of shit. Too much and you'll be at the local shop getting a quote to straiten the axle from all the shit that was in it.
