I was in the middle of closing on this house, and it went a blaze last night. Guess I will need to find another one. Oh well, guess I just have to hold on to that $44million a few more days.

damn, LT, sorry to hear that! did the fire burn all the way down to the basement and destroy the 64 air-conditioners?

Not yet, I was hoping to close on it before Goatboy comes down in Oct. so that I can put him up for the weekend. [:D]

Actually I just work about 5mi from where this is happening.

The estate includes the main house, listed at 43,169 square feet, and a two-bedroom gatehouse that is 2,448 square feet. There is also an additional guest house.

The garage holds 14 cars, and a 17,028-square-foot basement houses the property's 64 air-conditioning units.

Man, the two "gate" houses has more square footage than my whole house. And 64 a/c units! I couldn't even afford the electricity if they gave me the place.

LT so sorry to hear about your loss... [:D]

I watched that house being built over about the last ten years.  It is a colossus of vanity.  Over the years I understand it has gone through multiple owners.  And ol' Ross Perot does live a few blocks north of there on Strait Lane.

There is a cruel part of me that rejoices at its burning.  My bet is it's no coincidence it burned as the market is imploding.

** Edited to add if you go north out of Dallas on US75, up near Gainesville on the west side of the road is another similar size house started at about the same time as the house on Inwood.  That house got as far as frame and drywall when the energy market crashed and it burned in the night.  What amazes me is ten years later someone bought the charred framework and is actually completing it.

I felt the same way. However the owners are probably heavily insured and tanning themselves on a yacht in the Carribeans.

I same thing happens here in Charleston at some of the large seafood places. Usually, every 5 to 10 years at the end of a tourist season about the time they need to remodel.

... Damn lordtrader, I knew you were in the trading business but I didn't realize that it was that good these days.

... Sorry to hear about your house-to-be.
Come to Arizona. You can stretch that kinda money really far here.

That's almost as bad as that Global Crossing crook who built that home in LA for something like $100 million. Hell, I only need 3 rooms to be happy.

Two retired businessmen are chatting at a resort in Florida, swapping stories. The first says, well, I had a printing business. It never really took off, had a rough start. We did ok for a few years, but then business fell off. Last year a fire completely destroyed the place, and since I was only a couple years from retiring, I just decided to retire on the insurance money.

The second guy says, "Wow. I had a print shop too, we actually did ok, never got rich, but it paid the bills and we kept busy, but we got wiped out in the big flood a few years back, and so I retired a year early."

The first guy looks incredulously at the second and says, "How do you start a FLOOD?"

You think that's big, there's a guy from Oklahoma building a 104,000sqft. log house up near Walden CO.  Now that's big, not that 74,000sqft. is small...

Kee-ryst, 104000 sq-ft is 2-3/8 acres.  You could put your own 100-yd range in there. [whacko]

Ha, that's a cottage by Vanderbilt standards.

That's not a house, THIS is a house.  The largest private residence in the US.

Boasting 4 acres of floor space, the 250-room mansion featured 34 master bedrooms, 43
bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, 3 kitchens, and
an indoor swimming pool. Priceless art works
and furnishings adorned its interiors. The
surrounding grounds were equally impressive,
encompassing 125,000 acres of forest, park,
and gardens.
