This is something thats been bothering me for a couple of days..

here are the facts.

on july 5 2002 a white female police officer parked her motorcycle on the shoulder of I-65 northbound in Birmigham Al, WALKED OUT INTO 70 MPH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AT 5PM AND DAMN NEAR CAUSED A 10 CAR PILEUP so that she could "assist in a traffic stop."

there was a patrol car already behind the stopped vehicle. the person was sitting in his car with his hands on the wheel.

there was an exit and onramp 1/2 mile down the road.

what pisses me off is that this officer felt it was necessary to endanger the lives of the people on the road rather than take the extra 2 mins to turn around.

I am not LEO bashing here. I have the utmost respect for honest LEO's who do their job with pride, but I am considering filing some sort of complaint.

Any thoughts.

That's what scanners are for. I always get a kick out of listening to cops late at night on a scanner.

True. I have no idea what radio communications took place. But the FACT is there was no gunfire, no fight, no act of aggression towards the officer behind the vehicle. I saw it within 10yds because I was the first one to nearly hit the female officer.

Before anyone says something like "you dont know what its like" I do. I was in a cadet program throughout high school and a reserver officer for a short time. I have made traffic stops, responded to DV calls and other situations (usually unarmed).

Still, I think this was a stupid move. Even if the vehicle was stolen..felon driving..etc. If the officer was not in immediate danger, is it worth risking the safety of passing motorists.

that is my question.

I can't tell you how many times I have seen an LEO almost cause an accident just so he can chase down a speeding ticket. They need to think about the people around them first and their need to fill their "quota's" second.

having worked with many of birminghams finest i'd say she was a moron. Most of birminghams cops seem to be the bottom of the barrell of law enforcement. Any decent officer has moved to hoover, vestavia or any of the other MUCH HIGHER paying departments in the area.

I wish I could have gotten a better look at her uniform. I dont know if she was birmingham pelham or hoover. The bike was too close to the median to see the markings, but the patrol car stopped was Hoover PD.

Again, I am not leo bashing. The majority of police in the outlying areas of B'ham are great, especially Helena PD. Wish all officers were like them.

No, you don't know what it is like. Until you graduate from the Academy and have a REAL BADGE on your chest, you are still nothing but a civilian and prone to obstructing of justice from the sound of it.

The jurisdictions around me switched to the Motorola APCO 25 digital trunked. No listening for me until Uniden comes out with their new digital trunktracker. It'll probably cost too much at first though.
