I have a theory:  POTUS did this on purpose, not because he hates the church (although he just might).

He did it for a simple reason:  TO GET THE ELECTION YEAR DISCUSSION AWAY FROM THE ECONOMY.  Now, the R's can be painted as stone age troglodytes, successfully attracting independent votes to Dear Leader.  

The man took an awful, awful economic situation and made it worse; the only way to win reelection is to focus on the culture wars.  Thoughts?

He would have to be pretty smart to do that! Around here, he is a total idiot and incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time.

He pissed off a lot of people, and only made part of his hard core base, who would vote for him anyway, happy.

He came out of it looking weak and clueless.  

Which pretty much just reinforced existing fact.

Divert attention t culture wars theory is completely plausible

I think Dancing with the stars and professional sports are a more effective diversion from the real issues than a religion with strong values and deep cultural and historical roots.


Obama and his handlers assumed that America was more progressive than he thought.  This whole thing was simply a canary in the mineshaft.

Here's the thing, I work with a number of Catholic bishops and their communications teams. I can tell you that they are receiving a huge outpouring of support from other religious leaders. The clergy are smart enough to see across denominational lines to recognize that this is not about woman's health. Any woman can walk into Planned Parenthood and get these services at little or no cost. This is about the federal government trying to wrest more control over business, control people's lives, and strip away the belief system that puts faith in the higher power of God, and substitute socialist government as the new God. Marx may have believed that religion is the opiate of the masses, but Obama is trying to make free cellphones, and government cheese, the new opiates for his religion.

I firmly believe the Catholic church wants this controversy going through the summer.
