In the gun store, I asked for it by the name ".30 caliber Soviet".  The owner said, "Do you mean 7,62x39mm?"

"Yeah".

But I like ".30 cal Soviet".  Easier than "Seven point sixty-two by thirty nine millimeter".

I used to have to explain to people who were only familiar with common hunting rounds what a 7.62 X 39 is.

Easiest explanation.."It's like a .308 Short."

How about:
7.62 AK? (a variation on Colt Shorty's idea)

Not much shorter but easier to say. I guess it could also be .30 AK.

Leave the .223 for the Varmint hunters. Here it's the 5.56 [:D] Metric sounds more official, and it's easier.

Not to be confused with:

I tell you what next time you go into the gunshop just bring your Ak or SKS in with you. Tell the salesman that you need bullets for your rifle. When he asks what Cal it is just put the muzzle right up close to his face so that he can see what the diameter bore is. Im sure you will get lots of ammo that way.

Just call it 762 by 39, works for me. No need to say 7.62 x 39, if the guy behind the counter doesn’t know what you want then stop shopping at wally world!

But .30 Soviet could identify 7.62x54R just as easily as 7.62x39.  How about .30 Russian Rimless?

I pretty much use "seven six two AK".  It flows well.  Everyone knows your talking about the AK round and not the Mosin-Nagant round.  While there are AK's in 7.62mm NATO, and 7.62x54r, they are usually not as common as those in 7.62.

"AK Ammo" doesn't cut it, as not only are there a host of AKs in different calibers, but 5.45x39 is pretty much common as well.  For that round I use "five four five".  There really isn't anything else of that claiber, so any suffix is irrelevent.

I use "two two three" for an AK in .223 instead of calling it "five five six" simply because there can be little confusion with 5.45x39 when you use the commercial nomencalture.

So for me it's "five-four-five", "seven-six-two AK", "two-two-three" and "seven-six-two by fifty-four".  That covers my calibers of AKs, and it's pretty clear what you mean.  It also dosn't draw out the talking much.  You may have to go back and use the longer designation later to clear up confusion someone has, but these are about the easiest to use for me to start with.

I just think it is funny how you have all these easy ammo designations and and then you have these long dimensions:

.22
9mm
.45
.357
.38
.223

THEN you have ...

7.62X39
7.62X54

keep in mind those are shortened designations.

9mm = 9 x 19mm
.223 = 5.56x45

im not sure what the metric designations of the other rounds are, but im sure they have one.

Indeed!  In my opinion, once again, the metric system wins.

Metric vs English
9*17 vs .380 Auto (38 ACP)
9*18 vs 9mm Makarov
9*19 vs 9mm Parabellum (Luger)
9*21 vs 9*21 (not enough in country to change)
9*23 vs 9mm Largo (or 9mm Steyr which is actually different)

Actually the designation is 7.62 NATO.  .308 NATO does not exist.  It's simply called .308.  There's a round with some names: 7.62 NATO, .308, 7.62A, 7.62x51mm.

Problem with calling them M43 is that the boxes are not marked so and no one will undertand what you are talking about.

I'd like a box of M193's please?

7.62x54R would be more like "7.62 Czarist."

Remember, the 7.62x54R round was developed in the 19th century. [:D]
