Canadian culture? [>:/]

MONTREAL (CP) -- Six out of 10 Canadians felt the prevalence of American culture in the country was a threat to our own culture's survival, suggests a new survey.

The Leger Marketing poll indicated 61 per cent of the 1,500 Canadians surveyed defined the threat as very or somewhat important, while 36 per cent said it was somewhat or very unimportant. Another three per cent of respondents said they didn't know or refused to answer.

Council spokeswoman Donna Balkan said one theory for such concern about cultural sovereignty is that people have become more attached to their own cultural identity in the face of increased globalization.

"If the majority of Canadians are concerned about potential domination by American culture, they're more likely to support, nurture and encourage the work of Canadian artists," Balkan said in an interview from Ottawa.

There's no doubt Canadians care about their culture, said Mike Gasher, an assistant professor of journalism at Concordia University who has written extensively on cultural policy.

"We're cultural consumers," said Gasher.

"As much as American popular culture is part of our popular culture, in certain areas such as books and magazines and movies, we still want to touch base with what our own writers and filmmakers are doing.

"I think the two can exist at the same time."

Most of the other questions included in the survey solicited Canadians' views on various cultural interests, such as movies, theatre, art exhibits, books and television.

In the case of movies, 63 per cent of respondents said they had seen a film at a movie theatre in the last 12 months. Of those people, 30 per cent said they had seen at least one Canadian movie.

While fewer respondents -- 37 per cent -- had seen a play during the same period, 61 per cent of those theatregoers had watched a Canadian production.

On the literary front, 73 per cent of people polled said they had read a book in the last year. Of that group, 61 per cent had read at least one book penned by a Canadian author.

The margin of error increases for smaller sample sizes.

Balkan said she was somewhat taken aback by the results of the film question.

She pointed to statistics suggesting that 97 per cent of screen time in Canadian movie theatres is taken up by non-Canadian films.

"So the fact that 30 per cent of Canadians saw a Canadian film is very impressive. It shows there is increasing public interest in the Canadian film industry."

The same can be said about live theatre, a reflection of the fact more companies now stage Canadian-written work, added Balkan.

While the poll doesn't offer up any clues as to why Canadians feel threatened by American culture, Gasher said one possibility could be that people are seeing some homegrown material marginalized, or squeezed out of the marketplace altogether.

Magazine stands, for example, are stacked with American publications, leaving those seeking a Canadian alternative to dig to the back of the rack.

The situation is similar for plays and movies, where geography, not preference, is often the determining factor.

"Even if you wanted to see a Canadian movie it isn't always possible because often there isn't one playing at a theatre near you," said Gasher.

While I agree with you sentiments, I need someone to explain that expression for me.

Possibilities:

1. Urinating while hanging on to the upward postion of a dangling rope. Since the hands would be somewhat busied by holding on to the rope, pissing while "up a rope" one would either risk falling, or urinating on themselves since the hands would be on the rope rather than on the hoffman. Either eventuality would busy said "pisser" in more productive activities that these Canadiens are currently engaged in.

2. Urinate on a rope using an upward motion. While significantly less dangerous or humuiating that option #1, it still would convey the desired message of "bugger off" by those recommending others piss "up" a rope.

These polls are total bullshit! Canadians (my Canada does not include quebec). Feel a bond with are fellow North Americans. Culture WTF are they talking about? We eat the same food,we wear the same clothes, we listen to the same music, we watch the same TV shows and go too the same movies, we have the same values, we want the same things for are families, we drive the same cars, we watch and participate in the same sports. We are 95% the same. This is just more liberal B.S. When the liberals talk about culture what they really mean is "liberal " values. They are afraid the more Canadians learn and interact with the United States the less power they will have.

This is one of the funnier polls I've seen.

First of all, the poll wasn't a poll on US-Canadian attitudes, it was a poll on the Arts in Canada.  Which, if I'm guessing correctly, would in most polled households result in a big yawn and a click followed by the sound of the dial tone.  

Then there's that inexplicable surge in Canadian film viewing, if the poll is to be believed.  3% of the films (the Canadian ones) were apparently viewed by 30% of those polled.  Since Canadian films just don't attract ten times as many viewers, this shows a bit of a problem with the results of the poll.  At a minimum it suggests that those polled were from an atypical sample group consisting largely of Canadian arts and film buffs.  Ignorance and/or deceit could also explain things.

Still, what Dugster and Devilsadvocate says.  Except that according to the CIA World Factbook, 'approximately 85% of the population is concentrated within 300 km of the US/Canada border.'

If you took the same poll in the same place and asked it differently they would say the same thing about the REST OF CANADA!  

French Canadians been trying to secede for years.  I say let 'um.  We should make B.C. the 51st state anyway.

My only issue with the Great White North is their totally open immigration policy. If you claim political oppression you get in. Osama could show up saying he's oppressed because Pakistan shut off his CNN and they'd let him in. The problem with this insane open door policy as with the wide open border, lots of bad guy types can cross easily. We have our own issues with open borders, but the Canadians could help by tightening up a bit. As I do quite a bit of biz up there I can say that this view is shared by many Canadians as well. And the french have WAY to much clout up there!

Ya I agree, but my big problem is my tax dollars go to pay for their welfare, medical, dental and medication plus other benefits, it is insane. I don't get free dental or medication why should they.

But as for open borders; 70% of our refuges and new immigrants pass through the United states before they get here that is a fact. The united States has a huge border problem from around the world not just it's physical borders.
