Who Bassist John Entwistle Dies

Reuters

LOS ANGELES (June 27) - John Entwistle, the bass player for veteran British rock band The Who, died in Las Vegas on Thursday at age 57, just one day before the group was set to begin a North American tour in the city, the Clark County Coroner said.

Entwistle, a bearded, taciturn type affectionately known as ''Ox,'' died at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, said coroner Ron Flud. An investigation was under way into the cause of death, he added.

The Who, known for such hits as ''My Generation,'' ''Pinball Wizard'' and ''Won't Get Fooled Again,'' were scheduled to begin their three-month tour in a small club at the hotel.

With Entwistle's death, The Who are down to just two original members, singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend. Original drummer Keith Moon died of an accidental pill overdose in 1978.

In addition to playing bass, Entwistle helped out on backing vocals. His songwriting contributions to The Who were sporadic, mostly limited to a few album tracks and B-sides. He released a half-dozen solo albums.

Entwistle, who was born in the London suburb of Chiswick on Oct. 9, 1944, joined Daltrey in a forerunner of The Who in the early 1960s while working as a tax clerk. The band ultimately took shape in 1964 and made an immediate impression with its ''Mod'' stylings and its expensive habit of trashing all its stage equipment after each set.

I don't know exactly how to post a clipping, but there it is.  I was supposed to see these guys play on Saturday...

Fvck.

The Who was one of the greatest bands of all time.  I'm glad I saw them when I did.  I think I'll throw on Live at Leeds...

[:(] That sucks!!!

As a side note, he did have one incredible guitar collection. I wonder if it will go up for auction or to a museum....

Sad news. Can somebody please tell me how a guy like Keith Richards has made it so long? The guy defies medical logic. [:D]

This is so sad. He is my favorite rocker. Well, next to Charlie Watts.

sorry he's gone (especially considering the current surplus of no-talent "musicians" on my MTV who really need to meet the business end of a Mack truck.)

Local (San Francisco) rock stations are playing a lot of Who today...marked improvement over their usual rotation.

AS a bass player myself I grew up emmulating the style of John Entwistle. That man was PURE talent. He had no stage moves nor facial expression when he played because his fingers did all the magic.

If you have the Who's "face dances" album listen to "The Quiet One" He sings it and the song is about him.

He will be missed. [:(]

I am also a bassist of 17 years. John Entwistle and Steve Harris(Iron Maiden) are my influences.

Stuart Hamm
Geddy Lee
Stanley Clarke
Chris Squire
Louis Johnson

Just too many to mention. But DAMN! John Entwistle... Mr Thunderfingers.... gone.

You forgot Billy Gould, Flea, Fieldy, Billy Sheneen, Les Claypool, I suppose the list could go on. Unfourtunatly there are more out there that suck than those that take the instrument seriously. As a bassist, that troubles me.

I am a bassist also. Although I am more influenced by the style of Donald "Duck" Dunn, John Entwistle was a true talent.

My band does a cover of "Substitute"... It won't be quite as much fun now that he is gone.

Cheers,
Chris
