Came up not too long ago on here, and IIRC the main issue in the discussion was heat. Most folks don't realize how much heat the casings help "extract" from the firearm.

yeah having rounds cook off prematurely would be a really bad thing

They're working on it. I can't seem to find it, but I remember an article about the caseless ammunition used in the program. Something about the difficulty in getting a good chamber seal and the large amounts of smoke the weapon made. |
