I'm curious how they compare to NK subs.

There's a huge danger to ships from such subs, as proven from the sinking of the chenoan.

Those guys don't bathe more than once a year even when they are at home. I can't imagine what it smells like in a sub.

The sub is just a platform for the 200mph Hoot torpedo, supposedly reverse-engineered from a Russian design. That makes it a very viable threat.

I think they ought to give the crew their medals now.

Note the hatch leading in to the fin opens down. This is not the
internal bulkhead hatch as those are oblong shaped. Downwards opening
seems a strange design as water pressure would tend to force it open
rather than closed.

It's the same torp that accidentally the whole Kursk.

If it's a knock-off of an already bad design, it could prove to be entertaining when launched... or even stored poorly.

Every panel looks like a home-built project, albeit home-built projects done by someone who's at least careful to keep controls in straight lines.

Neatly done, but...advanced? YGBSM.

It's a solid step beyond a WWII-era Japanese minisub, but its effectiveness in maritime combat today would be, at BEST, being able to fire off

one torpedo before it's located and destroyed. And that's if the crew uses every imaginable stealth tactic in the book to reduce their noise

signature prior to firing. Like shutting down everything and resting on the bottom of the ocean prior to firing a fish.

I suspect that they will do exactly that: "resting on the bottom..." at least in some circumstances.

So it then depends on how good their sensors and torpedoes are....their subs are like CAPTOR mines.

ETA: if the crew cares nought for their lives, detectability is low, and the torps are decent, it could be a significant threat. I don't know if these are the case, but it's food for thought.

The Persian Gulf is quite shallow and narrow. There are a few spots that are ~250 feet deep but the majority is under 100 feet.The Strait of Hormuz is only 40 miles across and only about 150 feet deep. Small subs are very hard to find,which is why we had the Swedes as guests for so long to practice with their very advanced AIP sub.

The Norks managed so sink a ROK patrol boat and slip away without being detected. These are essentially the same boats but perhaps even better equipped.Nope,they ain't a Los Angeles but they don't need to be. Iran doesn't need to sink every boat,they just need to be enough of a nuisance to bring the shipping to a standstill. They've got a bunch of these,shitloads of speedboats and plenty of mines. Their plan is assymetrical warfare in the water,they know their conventional forces wouldn't stand a chance. Combined with shore based missiles,they could get lucky a few times.Also remember that they hit that Israeli boat off Lebanon.

Overall,they shouldn't cause the USN to shake in their boots but I'd hate to be on a merchant ship trying to run the gauntlet.
