Well,if they had the sense to use their great oil wealth that neither Germany,Japan or South Korea had following wars that destroyed far, far, far more of their country...they'd be building world class vehicles of all kind, electronics and have one of the largest economies in the world...
However, due to their cultural/tribal/religious shenanigans I don't see anything close to the like happening. The population and area isn't small enough to lord over like the small Gulf states and it will likely remain something of a shithole. I don't believe they are culturally very well suited to democracy except and unless there is a long period of time in which the military is the guarantor of stability,as in Turkey. The problem is that they don't have a well respected monarchy like Jordan and they have a halfassed military with no Attaturk like figure. Similarly, they have no Tito to keep them together peacefully.
I don't know, they're actually managing MUCH better than I ever thought but I'd say in the long term an independent Kurdistan is an eventuality ( depending upon how the Assad regime finally ends it may include the northern portion of Syria) and there will also be a reckoning day with the Iran. If somehow there is a revolution, the Mullahs get thrown out and the younger generation of Iranians want a decent country without aspirations of an empire, things might end up going fairly well. Regardless of Iraq's problems, there are still so many other issues that saying or thinking everything will be OK is just too much of a longshot.
In short,I have no idea...some Iraqi colonel is very likely wishing to be the next Saddam at this very moment.Hell,it very well could happen too.
